Canaries, Finches & SoftbillsDiscuss Mom with Beau Jr. in the Specific Bird Chatter forums; Finally got my film developed. Mom is loving her new little guy. He sings all day long. Sweet little thing!...

Congrats on the new family member! Your mom sure looks happy. I am glad she found another canary to replace Beau Peep.
Please, make sure she doesn't feed him 'color' food, it's full of chemicals which destroy their liver and kidneys. She can feed him foods high in betacarotene and that will help with the red but, of course, his color will not be as vivid a red as it is now without the chemicals (he's a color-fed canary, color-bred are never fire engine red like he is).
It would also be better if she gets him a bigger cage (he can't fly in there and that will atrophy his lungs) and put it against a wall at eye level (they feel safer that way -stress will depress their immune system- and don't get drafts that can bring on respiratory infections). Also, perches made of natural tree branches will keep his feet, toes and leg muscles and joints healthy.
