Re: Look what the Easter Bunny brought One should never use a mammal species as an example of what to do with birds. Bovines are social animals, canaries are territorial. In nature, wild male canaries have quite large territories and their song is a seconday sexual characteristic used to determine the size of this territory. That's why when you have two male canaries, they will sing more if they can hear but not see each other (breeders of song canaries put their cages one on top of the other). Because they are both trying to tell the other bird that this is 'their' territory and that intruders are not welcome.
Two male canaries from a color or type breed can learn to live together but they will be stressed out. Make no mistake about it. They might not fight all the time (the more aggressive the canary, the better the singer so breeds that are known for not much song will be much calmer) but they will also sing less, not breed as well or at all and die young. And it makes no difference whether they are brothers or not. Siblings can share a flight cage until their first breeding season but, after that, brotherly love is gone with the wind. |
