Breeding Amarelo and Canela
Jan/21
Well, we have progress. He has been singing more and more and, this morning, I saw him standing at one corner on the bottom of the cage looking down the crack between the wall of the cage and the bottom grid to see Canela, who is in the cage under his - and she was perching in the same corner, only she was looking up (had one foot on the bars to get higher -LOL) trying to see him. This is right on schedule and a good sign so, this coming week, I will put them in a breeding cage separated so they can not only hear but also see each other.

Re: Breeding Amarelo and Canela
I went to ABBA yesterday and got them egg food, petamine, a closed nest (I do not use any other kind) and a new breeding cage (I had gotten rid of all of them when I moved out of Pa) but I messed up because I chose one with solid sides (which is the kind I like because they feel their nest is more protected with them) but I did not realize it did not have a little door up high for the nest and the closed nest requires it so I'll have to go back next Saturday and exchange it. I also saw a very nice, not too expensive, parrot cage on a good stand for when and if Blue Grinch attacks me again AND a flight one for the baby canaries to learn how to fly -it's not as big as I would want it but, apparently, they don't make the kind I used to have because I haven't been able to find it anywhere.

Re: Breeding Amarelo and Canela
I forgot to tell you, guys, that I put them together last Sunday and things are progressing very well. Amarelo started displaying like crazy (raised the feathers on top of his head, flipped his wings, pushed his chest out and sang for all he was worth looking straight at her) within a couple of minutes of my putting down the cage and Canela doesn't look stressed out or concerned by his been so close to her so, so far, so good. Now we have to look for signs that she is receptive to his advances -but there is nothing yet. I'll keep you informed.

Re: Breeding Amarelo and Canela
Added nestling food to their diet and gave them a dosage of Calciboost (she will get two more before they are put together but not him). This weekend, we will start adding some grated hardboiled egg and I will buy hemp seed, wheat germ oil and nest liners.

Re: Breeding Amarelo and Canela
I have always wondered about hemp, I used to add it then I stopped again. Although I do add calcium without d3 (my birds are in sunlight) spirulina and vitamins.

Re: Breeding Amarelo and Canela
Yes, if everything goes well (and the only reason why I say this is because they are both very young and unproven) you will get yourself a baby canary, Jess.
And Angie, I've always used hemp as breeding food for the canaries (as well as wheat germ oil although I have no reason to believe mine have a vit E deficiency). It's one of those things I just keep on doing even though I know they still breed without it (I have tried it and there was no real difference in fertility or infant mortality). Hemp is actually VERY nutritious and ideal to bring on breeding condition because of their high protein, vit E and mineral content. See this:
Fatty Acids
Hemp seeds also contain polyunsaturated fats, known as PUFAs, which are nutritionally favored over saturated fats and may be useful for disease prevention. They are rich in essential fatty acids, with a significant concentration of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, both of which are proven to be vital to cardiovascular health. Hemp seeds are particularly rich in alpha and gamma linolenic acid. According to MayoClinic.com, regular consumption of foods and supplements containing these compounds have been shown to reduce blood triglyceride levels, lower blood pressure and lower the risk of heart disease. These compounds also help to reduce pain and inflammation from rheumatoid arthritis and may help prevent conditions such as dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

Minerals
Hemp seeds are particularly high in phosphorous, with 1,160 mg per 100 g serving. They also contain a significant amount of potassium at 859 mg per serving. Hemp seeds also contain calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc, copper and manganese. Sodium can also be found in hemp seeds in relatively low amounts of about 12 mg per serving.
Vitamins
Hemp seeds have a strong concentration of vitamin E, with 90 mg of vitamin E per serving. They also contain a significant amount of vitamins A and D. Hemp seeds also contain vitamins C, B-6, thiamin, riboflavin and niacin.
Protein and Fiber
Containing almost as much protein as soybeans, hemp seeds provide a healthy, vegetarian source of protein. Hemp seeds contain about 25 g of protein per 100 g serving and about 28 g of fiber. Foods rich in fiber help the stomach feel full and help sweep out toxins from the colon. This same amount contains 567 calories and 28 g of carbohydrates.
Arginine
Containing all of the essential amino acids, hemp seeds are particularly rich in the amino acid, arginine. According to MayoClinic.com, arginine is used by the body to remove toxic ammonia. Arginine is also needed to make creatine, and changes into nitric oxide in the body. As this transformation occurs, blood vessels become relaxed. For this reason, arginine may be useful in combating conditions such as vascular headaches, erectile dysfunction and coronary artery disease. Eating hemp seeds provides 3 g of arginine per serving.
