8-9 inches head to tail. Very stocky birds. They can be very loud. Mine heard the fire alarm go off yesterday, and have had great joy in mimicking the exact sound all day today....

People say two is better then one, but it all depends on if the birds like each other. Caiques are very picky on whom/what they like, and although I have two BHC's, they have a love hate relationship. One minute they love each other, the next minute they hate each other, LOL. More hate then love, it seems

Caiques need a very large cage in comparison to their size. I have mine in a size suitable for a grey (or larger) bird. They use every inch of their cages. Toys are another thing. You need alot of them! Short attention spans= boredom if they do not have a lot of stimulation and toys being changed around a lot. They are highly intelligent, but cannot stand to play with a toy for too long, lol.

Caiques bathe a different way then other species- by 'leaf bathing', or rubbing on wet vegetation. This accounts for the 'body surfing' you hear caique owners talk frequently about. Caiques in the wild also have a high fruit and nectar intake, and many owners supplement their birds diets with lori nectar. I myself feed higher quantities of fruit in addition to goldenfeast lori nectar, and organic pellets. Seed too.

Caiques are a lot different then an amazon- their personality can be overbearing to some. They are always going, going, going. I referr to them as two years olds on a constant sugar high, with the attention span of a moth, and intelligence like that of a grey.

All I can say is.....
Everyone should have a Caique. They are joyful birds who love to entertain and can always make you smile.

As for size, mine is the same size as my Hahn's Macaw and Sun Conure minus the long tail. They are stockier though.

Oh Josh! You can't get another bird so soon, you just brought the baby home. Besides, I've got dibs on the caiques! They are so much fun, even more playfull than conures. I want two of them soooo badly but I can't afford it just yet. I am very glad I do not posses a credit card or I would have maxed it out last saturday at Todd Marcus's on the two caiques that napped on me for a little while, they were wonderful ( see pics in the parrot chatter forum under " Josh and Jewel"!). They are cheeky little buggers, so adorable and totally irresistable! ---amanda

I have a bhc and man I'm telling you, if you want a bird that want lots of attention then get one.....lol. A caique will do everything and anything just to get your attention. They are hyper just like everyone says. Just be careful if you have another bird especially if your other bird is on the shy side. Caiques sometimes plays rough.
