8-9 inches head to tail. Very stocky birds. They can be very loud. Mine heard the fire alarm go off yesterday, and have had great joy in mimicking the exact sound all day today....
People say two is better then one, but it all depends on if the birds like each other. Caiques are very picky on whom/what they like, and although I have two BHC's, they have a love hate relationship. One minute they love each other, the next minute they hate each other, LOL. More hate then love, it seems
Caiques need a very large cage in comparison to their size. I have mine in a size suitable for a grey (or larger) bird. They use every inch of their cages. Toys are another thing. You need alot of them! Short attention spans= boredom if they do not have a lot of stimulation and toys being changed around a lot. They are highly intelligent, but cannot stand to play with a toy for too long, lol.
Caiques bathe a different way then other species- by 'leaf bathing', or rubbing on wet vegetation. This accounts for the 'body surfing' you hear caique owners talk frequently about. Caiques in the wild also have a high fruit and nectar intake, and many owners supplement their birds diets with lori nectar. I myself feed higher quantities of fruit in addition to goldenfeast lori nectar, and organic pellets. Seed too.
Caiques are a lot different then an amazon- their personality can be overbearing to some. They are always going, going, going. I referr to them as two years olds on a constant sugar high, with the attention span of a moth, and intelligence like that of a grey.
