Default Winston cut his foot

I'm not sure how, but it was sometime today and in his cage. I saw some blood stains on two of his perches. He's not bleeding anymore. I only noticed because when they were out, he was on one boing and Jerry flew over to the same boing. I saw Jerry land at least a foot away from Winston, but Winston shrieked repeatedly. I ran over to make sure he didn't get bitten, even though I know Jerry didn't land next to him, but that's when I noticed the dried blood on his foot along with a small cut. I assume he shrieked because he stepped on something small that irritated the cut.

The cut is near the underside of the toe (the longer back toe) - that's my only concern, that's it's towards the bottom and can potentially step on something to infect it. I washed off the cut with warm water - I'm hesistant to put anything on it for fear of him ingesting something while preening. He's not favoring it, that's good at least. I took out his sandy perch and cleaned his other perches. I checked all toys and ran my hands over everything in his cage, didn't find any sharp spots.

I'll be keeping an eye on him.

Poor guy. Glad he's not favoring it. I don't know how they do this stuff, my hen has a toe/nail that bleeds off and on, too. Your eyes are better than mine! I agree not putting anything ingestable like meds. I use Aloe Vera Gel when it happens to her. And sometimes I spread it on her rope perch so she gets it applied that way too.

I hope it heals up quickly for him.

He's making me worried because now he's fluffed up and sleeping with the lights on (I'm about to turn the lights off but I can't type in the dark lol) - but I know he's a little stressed from me handling him to wash it off. The handling went fairly well, it only took me a minute or two to be able to gently grab and secure him in my hand (no towel) and as soon as I was dabbing the water on he calmed down and then I think he knew I was trying to help. I apologized for having to do that, and afterwards he did reluctantly eat a treat from my hand (only after I bowed my head down).

Ouch! Sounds like you're doing everything right. I'd go along with putting some Aloe on it. Hope it isn't bothering him too much and heals right up.

Is there anything special to look for with the Aloe vera gel? I don't have any at the moment - it's just the green jelly-like stuff, right?

Yeah it's actually pretty clear and in the Giant supermarket here and health food stores. Giant is also Edwards and a couple more names. In the health food aisle with makeup and herbs and stuff.

Usually Lily of the Desert is the name. A dark brown bottle with a green hippie looking label.

Seeing the puffing would worry me too, but I think it's just the stress. First the cut then the water at night then the dreaded handling. If he's trying to sleep he's probably just de-stressing right now, I'd guess. I'd make sure it's warmish where he is and he'll probably be fine ..puff wise...shortly. And just a nightlight even if you need one for YOU lol.

Great, thanks Cindy. I'll run out to the 24 hour Meiers in a few minutes. I'm not going to do anything else with him tonight, he's in bed now and seems fine. Earlier I saw him with his good foot tucked up even. In the morning I'll put some of the aloe on his rope perch.

Poor Winston. I hope the aloe helps him. That's a great idea to put some right on the perch.

i hope winston gets better. you know those thread perches. run your hand over them. sometimes they get things hidden in them. i bought some q tip s the other day and they had little slivers of metal in them.. so what i am saying is rub your hand over your perches those criss cross ones. to make sure there is nothing in them.

corn starch is goo d to stop bleeding.....

good thoughts are being sent your way..
