Default Why Budgies?

Why did you choose a Budgie? What made them special to you and how did you get your 1st Budgie?

Ps. Your answers are completely anonymous, so don't be afraid to be truthful in the poll.

I think ultimately i chose a Budgie because they are small & because they are noted for being one of the most 'intelligent' of all the parrots. Our second reason was we were looking at rescues & there are always lots of Budgies there.

When I though about the bird I wanted, I had a shortlist that was always getting longer.
Budgies were always being put at the bottom of my list but never removed form it either. Small birds like the Lovebird, Lineolated Parakeet, Parrotlets, & the Budgie do OK in an apartment.

Laker my Budgie can fly freely from 3 rooms in the back of our apartment. We have been working with him doing Recall training. Yesterday he flew to us 5 times, flying over 25ft each time. He was very pleased with himself. He is more fun than I ever imagined him being & he has captivated everyone who has met him.

To be honest, we didn't know much about birds when we made the initial decision to get one. We agreed that the budgies were very lively and cute. We did research them online for about one week prior to getting Jerry, so we slightly knew what we were getting into (had NO idea what an obsession this would turn into! ).

I'm so glad that we didn't begin researching from a blank slate, without a particular bird in mind - we might have missed out on budgies and that would be a TRUE shame.

Jerry is my dream bird, he's everything I could want in a bird and more.

We got Jack and Zach from a lady who lived near us. She had them both for 3 years and covered them all day and all night because she was tired of their "loud noises" lol. Riiight.

I laugh when people say that Jerry is loud because a budgie is about as quiet as you can get for a parrot But most people that have made those comments to me are not familiar with birds in general and I'm sure they would fall over if they heard a larger parrot vocalizing

They make some very beautiful noises - they actually sing for quite along periods of time - something I wasn't aware of. I thought they only squawked or chattered. His 'music & twittering' makes me feel like I'm outside in the summer by the trees. I find it relaxing.

Too bad those people couldn't enjoy the music. Terrible for the Budgies.

Laker is so polite about being quiet in the mornings - if I sleep in, the cage cover sometimes stays on too & he hardly makes a noise. [we're talking about until 9am! instead of the usual 7am!] Soon as the cover is off he's twittering & then singing.

Our Budgie taught my cag to sing like a tweetie bird.
The budgee I have was bought after my grandaughters house and, pet fish were destroyed by the hurricane. She cried for days about her fish so one day her and I ventured up to Ginis neck of the woods and bought Rosie. All our pet stores had been destroyed.

My wife and I were having alittle spat concerning clipping Joey's wings, Joey our first bird, a female latino tiel.
I was fairly set back concerning the wing clipping idea, My wife said, "what if Joey gets hurt while flying in the house", Soooo, we didn't have a carrier at the time so I made a carrier out of a cardboard box and wrote all over the box, "don't hurt me" and "I will bite", and such things, I guess the vet was impressed by this and asked us if we could be adoptors if needed, My wife left our information with her.
2 weeks later I received a call from this vet saying there was a man there trying to give them 2 Parakeets, he said he and his wife were splitting up and he no-longer wanted them, he threated to turn them loose outside in the middle of winter so our vet took the birds and called me.
Huey & Louie are still here with me to this day, they are getting old but are very healthy, we have taken in 15 more of these little gems since that day.
I have Huey pictured under Brokenwings orphans thread, he is awesome and will talk, he flies to me during out of cage time and sits with me while I do my cleaning and feeding.
These little birds are (big parrots) packed into small packages, there are by far my number 1 passion in the exotic world.
I could sit and listen to there song forever, and when a person has 16 of these little wonders, the entire house fills with there song.

As a child I enjoyed budgies in my bedroom. Eventually I had whole family of them. Chirpie my first budgie is remembered with great fondness. The pet budgies I have now really belong to my daughter so that she may enjoy the same experience as I did, and we do so enjoy them. Peewee I guess runs the entire household. Peewee is a budgie shaped conure.

I got my first keet on St Patty's day when I was 8. Mom got her to keep me company since we moved around alot, and since we found out that I was allergic to dogs and cats.
