Default Visitors...

Wow, it was kind of crowded yesterday in my little 1BR apartment - there was BF with Bella, my little green Stinkefuss and 2 visitors who are staying for the week. They are Zap and Floyd and are friends' budgies. Though they've had them for over a year, and they are vet checked, I keep them separate in the bedroom. (the door's not closed though since it'd get too hot otherwise.)

I'm not gonna go too much into details, but I remember when they got them, and they were more used to being handled. As a matter of fact, I only got one of them to step up once to come out of the cage. Also, the diet needs major improvements. I told them multiple times, but what can you do other than tell people. I kind of feel sorry for the little guys (who are actually both girls).
Anyways, I'll play with them tonight and see if they wanna come out - so far no luck.

Also, I was thinking of offering some veggies and such - just to try. How do Jerry & Winston, Laker & Rio go for them?

Budgies are fairly cautious birds. It is unlikely you will make much of a difference over a short period of time.

Laker & Rio like fresh greens. Rio, as the baby, is more likely to try something right away. If Laker sees him trying something he will give it a go. Maybe if these birds saw your birds enjoying the veggies.....

I've been instructed by others to sprinkle seed on cooked veggies so they will at least investigate - I've seen breeders offering a lovely mix on a saucer rather than a seed bowl. The bowl hasn't worked for me yet. I haven't tried the saucer but i'm working on getting them to eat on top of the cage & hope this will lead to getting them to eat a 'kitchen sink' style meal.

2 girls hmmmmmmm - not many girl Budgies around here. Got any photos yet?

Shortage of female budgies at my house too! Mine go nuts for corn on the cob & lettuce/mixed greens. Most of them also love "birdie beans" . Once one of them tries it, most of them will join in. The pellets are another story. A few budgies actually eat them, most just like to throw them on the floor -- such nice pricey confetti!!

Budgies also would rather try hanging / growing stuff. Try weave into the cage bars. My budgies now eat the same as the other birds but they did need converting. I hid new food in the seed.

Ohhhh how fun, 2 little girlies visiting

I've also heard that budgies like hanging leafy greens, but my guys have always been scared of stuff like that So if they're not used to it they might be scared too, or maybe just try small pieces of hanging leafy greens and see how they take to it.

My budgies love broccoli, green peas, black eyed peas, brown rice, corn, a little sweet potato. Those are the faves, and I'm trying to work new stuff in.

Did you have any luck getting them to come out and fly? After a day or two they may feel comfortable enough to venture out.

Hanging carrot tops never seem to fail! Somethng about the fine texture of the little leaves. As well as perches made out of carrots.
