Default tj isnt doing well.

i have noticed that the side of his bottom beak is croooked and when he preens he makes himself bleed . i believe jojo is also regurgitating and feeding him. i have noticed his eating millet seed but am concerned about the blood on the legs. he is cutting himself badly. i have tried everything , took pictures of deformed beak to the vets and cuz it is on the side there is nothing that can be done. if it was in centre it could be trimmed but this is on the side.. not sure if you can see the picture I will post

i am concerned about the bonding of these two. jojo seems to be feeding tj

it cant be good for tj any suggestions from you

Do you think the vet could dremmel the edges of the beak a little bit so it's not so sharp? Is it possible that TJ is allowing Jojo to feed him, because he's not able to get enough to eat on his own with the beak being crooked?

Poor guy, I hope the vet can figure out a way to help him.

Side or center, the beak can be sanded down, the hard part is doing it.
& one must know what they are doing.
We do our own trimming here.
I am seeing the Vet says "no".
Seek a second opinion.
Even a finger nail file can work to take the edge off the beak.
Are you sure tj doesn't have mites? or scales?
I am not meaning to be dis-respectful but I simply feel your vet has mislead you a little "maybe".
There is always concern about regurgitating when done other than for feeding the young, (or a mated pair) I would keep an eye on this.

P.S. do you have a digital scale that weighs in grams?
If not, it maybe a good idea to invest in one.
Keep an eye on your kids weights.
It also maybe a good idea to keep neosporin one hand, put a little on his injured talon to staff off infection.

I'm feeling similar to Arty on this one.

Why did you just take pictures to the "vets", not TJ himself? Where these Avian Vets? I would also get a second opinion (certified avian vet) and do check into the mite thing asap please.

You were treating the mites - did it go away? - I don't see that it has. I too think I see mite's damage still.
The mite issue will continue to wear down your bird's health & his beak. It may well affect the other bird. A never ending cycle may arise.

My 2 fellows feed each other many times during the day - they have no need to - it is purely social. Jojo may be aiding Tj - it is commendable but shouldn't be necessary.

I feel for you & your birds - but please take him to another Vet asap. I really think that you have to at this point. I think once this is alleviated the beak issue will go away with a little time & care.

I would follow the advice given. I know you don't have a Vet around the corner & that the costs can be unsettling.

nobody that knows birds that well was on. and nobody is in tomorrow either. thats why picture was taken.

i did think it had to do with the top as you can see it is very sharp and pointy but just over the past couple of days the side is extended out .

the lady in winfield avian is not available tomorrow so not even sure tj can afford to lose anymore blood. it must be painful i do know he yelps when he is picking under the feaathers..

i will see what comes tomorrow... is poly sporin ok or does it have to be neosporin

thanks for the quick answer they are sleeping now.

I would use neosporin.
I sense your love for your babies, soooo please don't take my words wrongly.
If there is a sharp feature on the beak, this can be and should be addressed, I honestly would take your little friend to a different vet.
Sometimes pictures are very hard to go by, even if they are crystal clear, best to take your little friend in for an exam.
I understand the cost, believe me "I understand".
I simply feel this would be best!, for both of you.
Something for you to consider.
Here our vet asks us to come in to the exam room when she is treating one of our birds, if your vet doesn't do so, this may be a "flag", simply consider this.
If your vet doesn't ask, you ask, our vet trains us on how to deal with many issues, this helps to save on costs.
We were both trained on how to clip wing feathers, do nails, beaks, and so on, these are very needed "TOOLS", for your tool box.
TJ's Beak can be sanded down, however I am sensing there is a parasite that is causing TJ to preen a little extra hard.
& just a heads up, what TJ has will transfer to his cage mate, hence "double trouble".
TJ needs to be seen by a certified avian vet to assure his medical needs are met.
Grab a tube of neosporin and keep on hand.
Learn my friend, learn all you can to help you help them.
You do this by going into the exam room while your little friend is being looked at...and ask questions.
A good vet will train you how to take sharp edges off a beak, weather centered or on the side, ask your vet to show you how to do so safely.
I suspect your little friend has either scales or mites, easily treated with ointments, best to treat both birds.
Wishing the best for all of you.
Arty

Great advice has been given. I, too, would try to find another vet that will see TJ and get the beak sanded down and treat for mites.

Best of luck, I do feel for you and the little ones.

P.S.....again....LOL
I understand that there may not be a choice of vets as each city and or town is different.
Here in Minneapolis there are many, and believe me my wife has been through many before finding the right one.
If you look closely at a beak and or a nail, you can see the stop point when clipping and or sanding down, similar to our human nails.
clip/sand to short...bleeding will occur.
All I am saying here is this, beaks and nails are something every bird needs to be done, all our keets need a trim now and then.

Here's what I bought my Rose recently, this helps her trim nails and beaks and also assists her when she makes toys.
