Hey all -- I just got back home with a new companion for Pogo ... meet "Ziggy".

http://www.parrotchatter.com/gallery...DSCF1551-a.JPG

I looked at Budgies at two different pet stores and Ziggy was the one that caught my eye. He's still pretty young (still has head bars and a slight dark beak tip), and I'm pretty sure he's a male. The cere looks blue already ... especially in photos. Pogo was the same way when I got him. Pogo and Ziggy are both yellow faces, but Ziggy is much greener than Pogo who is more of a sea blue green color and doesn't have as much yellow in this wing scallops.

Ziggy seemed very active at the pet store and even came over to my wiggling finger a few times near the glass. Pogo did this also when I got him. I think Pogo and Ziggy will have very similar personalities and get along great. Ziggy didn't seem to pick on or fight with any other birds at the store, which is one thing I was watching carefully.

So I just got him home and in his own cage just about 30 minutes ago. He didn't make much of a fuss about anything on the way home. It was funny because we were trying to come up with a name on the way home and we are going through about 3 or 4 different names. When I blurted out "Ziggy" he let out the one and only chirp I heard from him so far ... guess he wanted Ziggy too.

I had his cage all setup, so all I had to do was get him in it. He basically let me grab him from his carry box and put him in without freaking out much at all. He even let me pet him a few times only about 10 minutes after he was in his cage ... but of course he's probably in the normal new environment shock, but when I pet his chest he really didn't flinch or jump away. I'm sure Ziggy will tame down very easily within a week.

So Pogo has no idea that Ziggy is chllin' out upstairs. I'm sure when Ziggy gets more comfortable and hears Pogo chirping there will be calling back and forth. I can't wait until they meet each other ... it should be really interesting.

This will be the longest 30 days. You will get really anxious for them to meet. I know I did.

Oh what a cutie!! Congrats! I love the green budgies. I can't wait to hear how things go (and yes, the Q is a long time!). In the beginning Jerry and Winston could hear each others' chirps but neither really cared much. There were only a couple days where they talked back and forth. Sometimes I wondered whether Jerry even knew it was a real live budgie in there (and my house is small so the physical distance between the rooms wasn't far).

Ziggy update.

This morning there was evidence that he's already been eating millet and some seeds ... not sure about the water, and I'm thinking not since his dropping were very hard. He even had some hanging from his vent indicating near constipation.

I setup another little water cup right next to the millet and later this morning it looks like he had been drinking since his droppings later this morning showed signs of a lot of moisture. I frequently put new paper towels in the bottom of the cage so I can monitor his droppings and eating progress.

He was somewhat skittish for awhile this morning when I first look in on him, but after being around him for some time I actually got him to step up on two different "mini training" sessions – it was surprising as it’s almost like he knows what “step up” already means. Ziggy is going to be super easy to tame down ... he's almost there already - unbelievable, that he's going even faster than Pogo did when I first got him. Ziggy wings are unclipped also and he was flying well at the pet store ... yet he seems pretty comfortable about the new environment. No chirping or any other sounds yet.

Great that he's eating and drinking now! Wow, that's also wonderful that he's responding well to you. Interesting that he's unclipped, I'm curious to follow how he progresses in regards to taming and everything - it's fascinating that we, on this board, have many different budgies who came both clipped and unclipped from various places and at different stages:

Jerry was a clipped baby from a pet store.
Laker was a flighted adult from a shelter.
Rio was a flighted baby from a breeder.
Winston was a flighted adult from a pet store (with at least one prior home).
And I think Pogo was clipped and from a pet store?

Nancy, what about Sugar and Spice? I seem to recall that Spice was from a bird show? Was he a baby? And what about Sugar (their stories are escaping me at the moment)?

I know that individual personality is key, but it's neat to try and correlate everyone's past history and the circumstances.

Yes, Pogo was clipped from the pet store when I got him. Ziggy was not, but the gal at the pet store wanted to know if I wanted them clipped. I decided not to since I want Ziggy to be able to fly with Pogo when they finally get together. I didn't want Ziggy confined to the floor while Pogo had the freedom of flight. I'm sure I can get Ziggy well trained by the time the quarantine is over.

Have done about 4 or 5 mini step up training sessions today. Ziggy is amazing ! Here's a pic I just took on the last session. He steps right up and will sit on my finger as long as I want him to.

I brought Pogo in to the room for 5 minutes to look at Ziggy only, just to see what he would do. I can tell Pogo will like Ziggy, as he started making kissing noises and talking. Ziggy finally started chirping some and it was loud !
