I have to agree with all, 3 is the very worst number ever. There will never be peace. Two will gang up against one. Instinct I think, a flock driving off an intruder. They don't seem to remember to be careful and not hurt each other then. Birds don't get physical with each other mostly because of the danger of injury but this doe not apply when referring to females. Blood results from 2 females. In an aviary situation as long as there are an even number of girls, or less girls all is fine. The boys do form bachelor pairs or trios, but I don't think 3 boys alone will work. With breeding it is always the females choice, the boys do try force them into boxes but if they don't want they are quite capable of telling the boy what he can do with himself. Budgie girls do talk differently, they cheeky, way stronger personalities. Girls are not less tame, they just more opinionated.

This might be something I would do too ... keeping the new one in a separate cage in a separate room for awhile until I could get it tamed some. I would get a very young Budgie, so this wouldn't take too much. I had Pogo finger tamed in about 2 days. Then introducing them in separate cages would be a good next step, and let it progress from there.

Might be looking around this weekend for a Pogo companion. I'd probably like to get another male as long as they would get along. Not sure I'd want to deal with mating and eggs and possible egg binding issues if Pogo had a female around. He's quite the bird's bird.
Just a note, it's hard to sex babies in fact really not guaranteed and a baby will possibly annoy Pogo or frustrate him if he's getting all "bird like" cuz the baby wont know how to respond the way Pogo "understands". But regardless any budgie will ultimately be nice for Pogo and vice versa. In the best scenario Pogo will show him the ropes so to speak but ime it's not really that way when the baby just shows up and not part of the "family" from birth in a flock.

Then again, bringing in an adult is tricky too so go with your gut. The quarantine should be a month but we all have trouble with that. You could call your vet and see if anybirdy he knows of needs a home. It would be the time of year for this years spring or summer babies to be getting homes, a bit late too if any of the vets customers bred anybody this year.

Call your local spcas I got my budgies pair there. They were very tame, sweet and scared at first but stepped up from day one. There are alot of budgies needing homes on Petfinder last time I looked. The benefits are if the bird has been ALONE in the SPCA like mine were for over a month (cuz they dont take birds usually) then in effect the quarantine was done for me. MUCH easier. YOu cant do that buying from a chain store they buy TONS at once and just cull the sick ones out of the cages so you really can be getting a weakly bred bird along with brewing problems like bacterial stuff etc especially when stressed being shipped to that store.

Some suppliers buy hundreds at once, I've seen it with my own eyes as a former store owner. (not that everyone doesnt deserve a home but when you have one there first you need to worry about that one as a priority imo)

Thank you for helping Pogo expand his world. After all it's not like he can do anything alone like we can, go out, mix with our own kind, find a friend etc.

Thanks for the info Cindy ... I hear ya. I wish every bird could have a home like Pogo and the other Budgies here where they are so loved and cherished. I think it would be neat to have an English Budgie like Sarah, but I don't know where to find them.

Yes, I could see how a very young Budgie might become "frightened" by the likes of Pogo, as he's a pretty hyper bird at times. It's hard to say. What I'd plan on doing is keep the new Budgie in a separate cage in a separate room for at least a week ... maybe two. Then put the cages side by side and see how that goes ... that might drive them both crazy since they couldn't actually get to each other but could see and call to each other.

I'd leave the cage locked on the new Budgie and let Pogo explore and checkout the situation while outside his cage. Once it's safe for them to get out together I'd probably put them in the huge cage together under close supervision for short times until they go use to each other. Once things settle down, then they could be out together and then eventually start living in the huge cage together.

You could also place an ad yourself - I did on a local internet pet ad Kijiji & in the Ont Bird Assoc Classified. A few people responded. One had an English.
Local Bird Clubs might have a listing.

Cassie knows someone for English too, but really, I wouldnt go with the English. The really high drive budgies are just way different and not a great match in my experience so right away there's a limitation. English are WAY more laid back you can google it and there's alot about it. Pogo is anything BUT. LOL

Sugar was a single budgie and very quiet and lonely. We never really bonded. He was not afraid of me and would step up but he wouldn't play and was very silent. So I got Spice. He was quarantined for over amonth. There was calling back and forth as my house is small and on one floor. When I introduced them I put the cages next to each other for a day. Then I let them out on the floor together for a day (They were both clipped at the time.) By the 3rd day I could tell they were liking each other. I opened both cage doors and Sugar went into Spice's cage and Spice started preening
. They are best friends and get along perfectly. I think I was lucky that they are so compatible. They now share the same cage and I have had no problems.

Yeah, no kidding. Pogo is a regular dynamo that creates more energy than he takes in. I wish I had that much energy!

YouTube - Pogo - "Kung Fu Fighting"
YouTube - Pogo - Ball Poppin'

I didn't know that about English Budgies ... thanks.

That's great ... I hope it works out that good if I get Pogo a companion. I hope Pogo will still interact with me like he does and keep on talking and learning new stuff ... it's so cool. I think he still will as I've had him for well over a year now. Maybe the new one will pick up some of Pogo's habits and words if the new one becomes a talker too.

Sugar and Spice look very nice ... great looking Budgies.

I've read the same about English budgies, that they're more relaxed. With Winston though, it's hard for me to tell if his "shyness" comes from having to learn everything from flying & coming out of the cage to playing with toys and interacting with people AND another budgie. He has no problem keeping up with Hyper Jerry though Winston is quite cheery and energetic. If he's not in the mood to deal with Jerry he just flies to the other room for a short time and sings by himself, then flies in again shortly after. And I believe that Nancy's (luvmath) English budgie is the more energetic one of her two.

Winston is learning to talk from Jerry. He currently says "I love you" and "good budgie." And I can tell he's trying to say more, I hear him make those funny sounds and tones like when Jerry was learning to talk. I didn't even expect Winston to say anything so I'm pleasantly surprised. And Jerry is still learning and saying new words and phrases since Winston has been home.

Shop around at stores or breeders or rescues and "the one" will make himself known. You'll just know. When I saw Winston I got that feeling in the pit of my stomach and a twinkle in my eye and I just knew even though I was hesitant about it. I wasn't even looking for a budgie at the time and I simply stumbled upon him.

For details of exactly how Jerry's first face to face meeting with Winston went, read this thread, Jerry was HILARIOUS, still cracks me up thinking about it:

And they meet...

Sarah is correct. My English Spice is way more active than Sugar so I guess it really comes down to each bird has their own personality. I loved the videos of Pogo playing. None of my birds play like that and I long for them to do that. I have a feeling that if you get another bird, Pogo will still be your pal. Pogo is just so cute!!!!!
