Default Rio, Rio , Rio - do you need a valium?

It was brilliantly pointed out on an animal show last evening that you can't really generalize about species' attitude - there are so many personality traits. Each animal/plant is unique to a large extent. I have to agree.

Rio is driving me crazy. Unlike Laker who is so gentle & thoughtful about everything. Sure Laker has his 'fault' - he is very nervous about new things but with some patience he will rally & does learn.

So far Rio is not doing any of those things - learning I mean. He is loud & in your face. In fact now I can't read or rest in my room - pity as I like to spend time with them & read too.

He lands on my head or hands or feet ceaselessly. I type with my left arm on top of my head 1/2 the time. He started having a love affair with my hands in the Spring - when I tried to get him more comfortable stepping up in a variety of circumstance. This has escalated - he now feeds my hand when I ask him to step up.

Now he wakes me up by shouting in my face from the pillow next to me m- this is because I asked my husband to let him out in the mornings as he really shouts & bangs around in his cage. I recently asked him to put Rio's cage in our walk-in closet until I get up. Laker just waits until I get up before singing or making noise - see his competition?!

Rio has started nipping my feet if they are the only thing available - either reading or resting .... I haven't tried doing any art - I think he's afraid of the paint brushes.

Do any of you have these issues & what have you done about it?

Ok I know it is bad to laugh at someone else but this is just too funny. We have to hide away sometimes, or you get bird help where bird help is really not needed.

Poor little guy! He thinks you are the prettiest bird he ever saw! Maybe you could put a photo of yourself on his cage. Hee hee! Seriously, I don't know what to do. Ruby is getting where she wants so climb down and come to me. These birds can certainly have one track minds!

I'm glad I am amusing. You really have to be patient when this is happening.

I'm going to try to 'stick' train him - it is the only thing I can think of. I wish I'd done that earlier.

I was telling my friend & she said give them [Rio] a 'time out' in his cage. As they are so used to being free all day - I just can't see it - it sounds too cruel & I don't think it will do any good - well maybe I'll get to read in peace. Essentially our bedroom is their bird room even when we are out or busy. Then other times they have the 3 rooms to buzz around in.

It is harder to train 2 birds. Laker has been trying to hang out with me & he is so quiet. He climbs up my arm & sits on my shoulder ... then in flies Rio shouting and wings a blazing ... & 9 times out of 10 Laker leaves.

I think I'll try training him on his own again ... wish me luck.

A photo update.

I was working on their cages & stopped to chat & try & get some good photos. The photos aren't great but I had to show you the scene.

1) Rio sees the hand & starts courting 2) Laker runs over to get in between.
3) Rio is starting to get excited. 4) Laker hops on to my arm & gets my attention.

I am trying to stop Rio's behavior towards my hand so that will hopefully be the last document.

They are being supper adorable tonight - Laker is very determined to hang out with me. Rio is his shadow of course.

I think I may have stopped the head landing part - none tonight.
