I have no idea where the mites come from but periodically only my budgies get infected. It can be that wild birds bring mites to the budgies. I sterilize they aviaries and dust all the birds. I don't believe it is a sign of a bad parent to get mites only if you don't fix the problem. The part that I do know is that you have to continue the mites treatment for 3 - 4 weeks after you think it is gone, re-infestation seems to happen. If the sprays says to do it twice, then do so and again twice every week for 3 weeks.

There are many different kinds of mites. Pogo had the kind that would hide around the cage and only crawl on him at night to suck blood. I think they are called "blood mites" or "red mites" ... and a few other various names.

How to Treat Blood Mite in Canaries - wikiHow

Mites and Lice

There are other kinds of mites that are very small and burrow into the cere, feet or around the eyes or other fleshy areas -- scaley face mite. They actually live in the bird at all times. But the blood mites supposedly get off the bird when daylight comes and they go hide out until dark ... so they are very different animals.

"The most commonly encountered mite is the scaly face mange mite of budgerigars, called Knemidokoptes pilae. It is found on the cere (that fleshy portion of skin over the beak where the nostrils are situated), the skin around the beak, around the vent and also on the legs. This mite burrows in the skin, causing a powdery appearance to the skin, and if you look closely, you will see a honey-comb pattern of holes in the skin, representing burrows and tunnels caused by the mites. These lesions are usually not itchy."

The treatment for each kind of mite is different, so if you suspect any mites then you should find out exactly which ones are around, if any.

Hi,

It looks like it might be scaly face, common in budgies. It is easily treated with Ivermectin (insecticide) from the vet, or by smearing a tiny dab of vaseline or margarine, daily, over the beak and cere until the rough appearance goes away.

Scaly face is tiny mites; they seem to come from nowhere.
It makes the bird's face itchy.

My birds get it every so often.

Sarah

TJ actually has settled down a lot.
He isnt squaking like he was .

so it may have been mites not sure still to be honest i have been reading a lot on mites. tj could have had these mites up to 12 months ago..

what a lot of info,, boy.... i am not saying this is what it is but after spraying the other day. I now have washed their stuff in a very light solution of vinegar . I have no place to put things washed out in sun here to dry but will put back when safe

If you have no sun, tumble dry the things on a hot cycle or bake in the oven depending what it is.

It can be the mites have been around for a long time, but come and gone, if it was long term infection there should have been more damage.
