Default Budgies changing mates

It is spring in South Africa so I have returned the nest boxes to the budgies. A little while ago 2 male budgies were removed because of injury. I have since returned them to the aviary but when they were out the wives of last year have been setting up house with a new husband. I only had them inside for about 3 weeks. It seems strange that when the green females beak was injured last year, her mate fed her and took care of her while it healed, and now she just dumped him. She is now set up with a lutino male that has been trying to attract her attention for the past 2 years, although last year we had a strange yellow baby in the green nest box. They have a clutch of 3 eggs. Thunder the blue boy that hurt his wing does not fly too well but he does get around without crashing like a stone. His wife is giving him the cold shoulder still and is most interested in the green/yellow box. It is very strange to see a trio of budgies together. So I will see what hatches in a little less than 3 weeks time.

I used to breed budgies, at first I had them in a colony set up but after about a year I put each pair in it's own cage and had the cages all side by side that way I could be sure as to who the parent birds of the babies were without any doubt. I noticed when I had them in a colony setting that sometimes a female would take a liking to another bird's mate and it would cause bickering. Most likely the females chose different mates because the males were injured and were removed and females like to have the strongest bird when given a choice as it's mate to ensure she will be fed while on eggs or young chicks.

I keep in touch with Rio's home & his parents have recently split up.
They are also in an aviary setting. His dad is now paired with another male & the hen had a new green mate & their first clutch is 2 eggs. She has produced 4, & 7 babies this year with Ice & now 2 with her new beau.

I saw from the breeder's postings that another pair had a baby 100% like my Rio so i wrote her about it. She seemed to think it was a natural baby form that clutch but i think someone was spreading the wealth [when they had 7 already]. That pair has also split up.

I'm not sure if the owner is influencing this but the aviary is pretty open concept & the nest boxes are positioned around the room.

Guess Budgies like the diversity.

Budgies are very promiscuous, but I never thought about it before now. The green hen and blue hen were bought together as babies early 2005 they have always been friendly and never argue like some of the other hens. Just seems a bit mean to me when I know how good a father the green boy has been. Last year he fed babies after the hen started a new clutch in another box. He had 2 boxes to look after.

Well he's a keeper for sure - sounds like a wonderful Budgie. Does he get a mate this time around or is he out of luck?

Have you a photo of this little fellow with the great personality?

This is all 3 together. The lutino male, Sunshine, does not have a blue cere. At first I thought he was female and a lesbian. I have since realized he has red eyes and being lutino he does not have a blue cere.

He was the part of the first pair of budgies we got Thunder, blue male, and Sunshine. They were not interested in breeding. Later we got the green male from my sister and a short while later we got the green, blue and yellow hens from the pet shop.

Sunshine has been in love with the green hen since the day he saw her, she only had eyes for the green male for the longest time. He has been unwavering in his desire for her, so for him maybe patience is rewarded. He did try make a nest last year with the yellow hen but nothing hatched. Fudge a yellow girl hatched out of the green box, that while it may be possible that she is a split, I did not think the green genes could have produced her. Silver also came out the green box???

I am not sure if the green male gets a mate this time round, they don't always pair up, but it is only the begining of the season. He has inspected the nest boxes and he is singing to the spare girls but so far no one has replied.

The green boy has been feeding a blue hen today. They have been having preening sessions.
