Default Budgie Toy Question

I had a customer email me this morning and want to know if this toy would be good for a Budgie.I've never really spent much time with them,so I'm not sure.I guess my first concern would be if they get get their head stuck in the bagel tubes, they have a 1" opening, are their heads bigger then that?? I'm going to send her a link to this thread so she can read it,so would you get this toy for your budgie??.She is also still deciding on a bird,so PC could give her lots of info on the different species. Thanks for your help.

Here's a pic of the toy as well as the description:

Bunches of Bagels
31 Birdie Bagels in 4 sizes: 3",2",1" and bagel tubes all strung with Paulie Rope. With a 48 mm NP bell and a NP Pear Link.Over all length is 10".

I would be concerned with the 1 inch rings but the rest looks fine.

I would probably stay away from the 1 inch rings too just to be on the safe side. Overall it looks too large for a budgie in general - 10 inches is way taller thana budgie and usually budgies have to acclimated to toys and something this large may scare them unless they've really played with toys previously.

Try something made with pieces of balsa wood, my guys LOVE to gnaw the balsa into little toothpicks. Bells are good too, as well as beads that they can push around. Winston loves to preen and chew on things like sisal rope too.

Another point of view ...

Well I don't have a problem with it - their wee heads are about 1/2 inch wide at most - they are more feather than substance. Their shoulders would prevent any further entry. I think I worry most about their feet getting caught in toys. This one has lots to grab.

The classic plastic ring, hanging toy is an example that works really well for them - they put their whole body thru the rings- which are 1 1/2" dia. I bought a wooden version with square 'rings' - Laker tried to put his body thru the rings but only could accomplish it on the first & last ones that only have one ring blocking the opening. When he couldn't fit his body inside he gave up after a few tries. We ended up using it as a swinging bridge.

This toy looks like a lot of fun - something I might try on the outside of the cage - hanging down so they can destroy it - I use things like this to cover all the paint Rio is taking off Laker's cage - one side is slowly being covered.

I look forward to hearing from your customer/friend - hope they join PC. If they choose a Budgie they are as much fun as any bird & very funny & smart. They also fit in most housing situations & still have the space to fly - just had to put in plug for the little guys.

I've never had an issue with either of my budgies getting their heads stuck either, and Jerry can be rough with toys and he's had nearly every kind of toy. But my experience is limited with my 2 boys so I don't know if it's common or not have or not have any issues with getting heads stuck.

The spot I circled is what I would be concerned with as far as heads getting caught. Their heads can get caught in between the bigger circle and the stacked one on the poly rope.

I think too big and intimidating, they will use it to sleep on but not play with. Budgies love paper and balsa. A budgie can go thru 20mm bar spacing which is maybe 3/4 inch. A toy can be long like 10inches but then must be narrow and not bulky. A single rope type toy with a lot of play stations along the way will work.

As far as Budgie toys go - the woven basket that Sarah bought for my 2 Budgies was great. Flat like Angie said - not too busy but great for climbing & chewing & tasting. #14 reply on ~ http://www.parrotchatter.com/f20/sar...it-5495-2.html

A year later it doesn't look so pretty.

My keets favorite things are live spider plants (they love to eat them and 'bathe' in them -the soil must be organic because they also like to roll in it) and the dry agave things (like Bird Kabob but they prefer the huge ones so they can hollow them completely). They are not much into playing with toys like this one. They don't seem to go for frivolity. They do play but mostly with each other and their games or activities are usually with a purpose, not at all like the bigger parrots that like to just pass the time banging things together.
