Budgie Colors & Patterns for Beginners

First let's talk about colors, Budgies come in a variety. These colors are Blue, Green, Yellow, White, Grey, Violet. These colors have come a long way since the original Green or Yellow Budgies found in the wild. That brings us to our 1st Color and Pattern, Normal.



Normal

Normal refers not to color but to the wing pattern, a Normal Green would have black with yellow trim and a Normal Blue would have black with white trim. Normal is recessive.

Spangle

Spangles are very easy to tell apart from the Normal Budgies. A Spangle's markings are the opposite of a Normal Budgies markings. They will be white with black edging. Spangle is dominant.

Opaline

Opaline's are a little different than Normal Budgies but can easily be mistaken for Normals. Unlike the Normal Budgie, an Opaline Budgie does not have markings between the wings and the wings are edged in body color, not in white or yellow. Opaline is sex linked on the x chromosome.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon Budgies are easy to identify, instead of the black pattern, they have a brown pattern. Cinnamon is sex linked on the x chromosome.

Dominant Pied

Dominant Pied Budgies are also easily identified, they have a band of clear body feathers across their mid section. The band can stretch further or smaller than other Dominant Pied Budgies. There is also a patch of clear feathers at the back of their heads and they are clear flighted. Clear refers to the Budgies base coloring, either yellow or white. Dominant Pied is dominant.

Recessive Pied

Recessive Pied Budgies have mostly clear feathers throughout their body except for the rump which keeps the original body color. Normally there are also a few normal colored feathers on their bellies. A Recessive Pied Budgie's eyes do not change color, they stay dark unlike the Dominant Pied Budgie. Recessive Pied is recessive.

Clearflight

Clearflighted Budgies have clear flight feathers, all of the feathers are clear and occasionally some tail feathers are as well. Clearflight is dominant.

Dark Eyed Clear

Dark Eyed Clear Budgies have no marking or color, so they are white or yellow. They resemble Lutino and Albino Budgies in all ways but one, they do not have red eyes.

Albino/Lutino

Lutino Budgies are all yellow with red eyes and Albino Budgies are all white with red eyes. They are very easy to identify.
