Now that's really exciting! Will it be connected to the house? Ive seen them do this around S. Ontario & in England. The Budgies go out in the winter too. Just not the days like today, -25C wind chill.

When I went to my old favourites link to see if I could find a sample - I was amazed at the growth of the bird industry in Ontario alone! I think it must be at least 3x's as big as when I was researching 2 years ago. It kind of has me uneasy. But maybe it means birds are becoming more popular.

I'm not sure yet. It kinda depends on the size and how much that will impact the back yard as far as the dogs are concerned - since we have 2 now. But this spring we are going to expand our fence to go more around the side of the house and I'm kind of envisioning the side of the house a good spot for the aviary - I suppose it could be off the side of the house there but going in and out of windows there wouldn't work, there are just 2 small rectangular windows there that open outwards.

I still haven't seriously gotten my thoughts and ideas together but one of my builders does want to sit down and discuss in the next couple of weeks. He did have some ideas of some ready-made materials at Cabela's - we'll check those out but I told him that materials have to be bird safe and he's not up to speed on the unsafe materials.

Perhaps you & Dave can scope out those materials for him & supply a list of approved materials.

I can't wait to hear more. Good luck.

I thought I needed to keep my first batch of budgies (4 of them) separate from my second batch (a pair) so the first night we had placed a smaller cage with the two budgies next to the bigger cage with the other four. I watched them to see if the four were territorial, but Botchok (who I believe is a male blue budgie) came up against the smaller cage and became all friendly with Fluffy (a female blue budgie). They seemed to be talking through the cage.

Batty, a green male budgie from my second batch, seemed not to care either way so we transferred them to the big cage the very next day. All six of them seemed to get along great.

They are a noisy bunch now, taking turns with their toys and playing with each other. It's great to watch! I have a chair right next to their cage and spend hours just watching them play together.

I think once Jerry and Winston get used to being in the same cage, they will be ok. Budgies are flock birds after all, right?
