Default Boy Budgie/girl Budgie????

When looking to buy Budgies, I was told that you can tell the males from the females by the coloring over their beaks, and at what age does this coloring show up? I don't want to breed, so will to males or two females get along together or should I perhaps just buy one bird...Sooo many questions I know...just curious for future reference.

The male has blue or sometimes purplish coloring at about three months of age.
Two males or one female and male are fine together. Most of the time two females don't work out.

Thank-you for the information...I'm going to do lots of reading to make sure I make good choices...Like I said before I don't want to breed birds, so 2 males are probably my best bet.

also in females, the cere or nose, is brownish to tan when in breeding season, and when not in breeding mode are a light blueish with white rings around the nose. BUT the sex can also be vayring in pieds where is has been found to be the opposite, blue female and brown male, but not always... hope this was helpful!

I think the others have summed up your questions on males and females. I've never had a female but as Susan said, I have heard that the females tend to fight more with each other.

As for getting 1 or two birds, it depends. If you're looking to have tame budgies, 1 to start may be a good way to go. A few of us here have started with one budgie and later when they were tamed we added another - after having 2 budgies now I wouldn't keep just one anymore seeing how social they are. Even though my boys choose to be caged separately (my English budgie came with "baggage") they have both grown immensely since having a buddy. Taming can be much more challenging when budgies are in groups or pairs since they have such strong flock instincts. But most of us are finding out that it's all about patience. Dig around here in the budgie section and you'll read all about our efforts regarding one and two budgies and how things are going.

Good luck and let us know when you bring home a budgie or two
