Default to ask a question re budgies vs cockatiels.

as you know I now have 2 budgies *male* and a cockatiel. I was working on the quaranteen business..... as best as I could.... being in a one bedroom apartment.... joey always managed to find where tookie was. and would fly in and sit on the top of his cage......so much for the quaranteen.... anyway I am still keeping them at distances......... but they are neither happy or glad of this situation...as they can hear one another...... I dont want to over react with quararanteen business........ and I will hang tuff as long as I can....

i know I need to look for odd things . different things to watch for that may warn me that there is a problem..... is there anything else that i should be doing.......

. question from a newby...... who has learned so much from this site... ....

and is still learning..........

I had a similar situation when i brought Rio into the mix. Laker & he were calling to each other & Laker was flying into the living room. In hindsight i should have been stronger about keeping them separate but it wore me down.

Things to watch for in your new bird:
- look at the poops - they're different from a Budgie but they should be firm. Sarah will be able to help & others on this one as i see my Mom's Tiels so rarely.

-look at your new bird's feathers especially under the wings & around the head. Maybe a magnifying glass? This is to make sure there are no mites.

-just look at his behavior - if all looks normal it probably is.

-the best would be a Vet visit & all the tests. Lots of things can remain hidden.

Oh - & Budgies & Tiels don't really have the same interest in each other so don't expect socialised behaviour - the Budgies can be little pests. I'd stand around & protect the Tiel & ward off the Budgies if they're out together. I definately wouldn't let them out together unsupervised. You have to see the temperament of the Tiel & how the Budgies react to his/her presence.

I wish you all the best. When my lone Budgie Laker was visiting the farm he flew in the sun-room with Alice. She watched him but didn't go near him. Mo the male - never took his eyes off Laker & i was worried if Laker landed on the cage he might loose a toe. Mo is very protective of his hen & is overall an aggressive 'son of a gun'.

Let us know how it goes.

PS- thanks for your kind & thoughtful words regarding the sparrow incident.
Best wishes, Jacqueline

It is very difficult to create a proper quarantine atmosphere, meaning separate air spaces entirely - which most people don't have.

If you have a certified avian vet near you, I suggest taking Tookie in for a well-check to get a general idea is she is healthy or not.

Jac gave good advice, watch the poops, overall behavior, etc. My cockatiel, Lulu, does have looser poops when she eats more things watery things. Her poops are more inconsistent than the budgies.
