Default Petey, the Red Lored Amazon (Looong)

Hello everyone

For those of you I havn't told, I will be getting my great aunt's red lored amazon,Petey, within the next few months most likely. He is 30+ years old and was bought by my great uncle when Petey was about 8. Petey loved my great uncle sooo much, he used to follow him around the house all the time and sing along with him as he played the trumpet. My great uncle knew his time was coming very soon so he gave Petey to my great aunt Virginia before he passed away.

My great aunt Virginia loves animals to death, always has, and always will. The family believes she is still alive today because of the animals she has. The problem is that she is 86 years old and her body let's her know it. Petey's cage (along with her other 2 birds, cockatiels) is always filthy because she can't clean it herself and her good-for-nothing kids don't help. To add to the problem, Petey hates women. So he's been stuck inside his small cage with very few to not any toys, for several years now. The only time he's come out of his cage was last summer when everyone was out on Virginia's porch and I was inside talking to Petey, who loves me to death, and I was petting him and decided to open his cage door. Well, he climbed up my arm and then climbed on top of his cage. His wings are not clipped and there are dogs in the house along with the occasional stray cat too, so I picked him up and painfully put him back in his cage (it was very sad).

Well, my great aunt Virginia knows I love animals, and take great care of them (she knows about the zoo in my room) and she also knows that Petey really likes me too. She said that if anything ever happens to her, Petey is going to me no matter what, but the family has been pushing it more and more and we believe it won't be too long before she gives him the home he needs, she has lived tough for all these years, she still has a bunch left in her but Petey cannot live like this any longer. I have a feeling that it will be some time this summer that I get him.

If we lived close, I could take care of Petey until I did get him but my great aunt Virginia, lives down in Virginia, about 7 hours from where I live (she lives down by the older generation of my family) so I can only help take care of him a couple times a year (I guess the cage eventually gets so bad that someone finally cleans it though because it is bad when I go there but not as bad as it would be if it was only cleaned by me a few times a year).

I am hoping everything works out and we are all happy in the end. Petey deserves a more social life, although he is talked to a lot now, he needs to be out having fun, playing with toys, interacting with others. Ohh..and guess what..I will finally have a stinkin' bird that likes showers! Petey's not a sissy like Jack, but that's a whole different story.

How many people on PC have red lored zons?
I have been researching them quite a bit now but I would also like to hear from you guys about their personalities, characteristics, etc. I know they are not the greatest talkers especially of the amazons but how well does yours talk? Not that it matters though.

I'm praying that everything turns out okay, I hope my great aunt Virginia doesn't take it too hard, she really wants me to have him, she says it all the time but I know it is going to be so hard for her to see him go.

Sorry for such a long post, I'm sure you guys are like by now.

I don't have amazons but red loreds usually have a nice personality. That is wonderful that you are going to be taking care of Petey and giving him a good home. He may be a little grouchy having been cage-bound for a while, so take it easy with him. Patience - lots of patience. Remember, Petey will not be in his element - whether better or worse, he is still comfortable in his own environnent.

Good luck to you!

I have no advice - don't have any experience with any amazons. But just wanted to say that I think it's great that you are doing what you can now to learn as much as possible so you can take the best of care for Petey when you finally get him. You are truly wise beyond your years and I commend you for being so committed!

A friend of mine has a female Red Lored that came to her from a rescue. The little lady doesn't speak English but is quite fluent in Amazon. She's very, very good with a great personality. She's very excitable and gets her stem wound easily. I've not seen her bite, but have been heads-up when handling her. She's a beautiful lady with a great personality.

May you have years of good companionship with this little one.

Shane, I have to add, that is very nice to see the younger generation
(younger than you Camille....Are ya feelin old yet?)

Being so involved in the avian world. Your posts here make me smile, and I can speak for the older ones here
(hush Camille) that its a good feeling to know the future of our babies are in good hands.

Your aunt would probably really benefit from pictures and update via letters when the transfer takes place.
