PLEASE do NOT give your birds rawhide. It's dried up animal skin, completely undigestible (animals in the wild do not eat the skin of the animal they killed for a reason and, in birds, it can cause crop impaction and intestinal occlusion) and there have been reports of arsenic and salmonella contamination because it's an industry that it's completely unregulated so there are not standards, no checks, no controls, no tests, no nothing! They are not even good for dogs much less birds! We put them on the list of dangerous items we give out to people who adopt dogs from us. But don't take my word for it, do research and you'll see.
Well thank you for your care and concern, and ruining one of my fun threads as usual. That piece of rawhide was from an all natural toy that I purchased for BIRDS! I do believe some of your posts should be posted in specific threads, and not in others that are here enjoying themselves. And believe it or not, some of us are also knowledgable and do care for our birds properly.
I also thought the rawhide idea has merit. You have to acknowledge that not all toys are properly thought out - good intentions but no cigar. When I saw it I thought - hmmmm wonder how that works - kind of like a frustrating knot toy for sure. Can he tear it? Unlike my dogs who always got sick chewing them I don't know if your parrot can get bits off.
No, he doesn't get bits off so he doesn't eat it. He bends it, that's about it. It was attached to a toy that also had colored rawhide along with wood, string, bells, etc., he loved it.
About a year ago I made a toy for Ollie out of chunks of rawhide because I read somewhere that it was a good, cheap toy part idea. Soon after that I read how horrible it was for all animals. It upsets me when things that the experts KNOW are bad for animals are still readily available to consumers. Many of the bird toys I see have pieces on them that I know aren't safe. Ollie never cared for the rawhide anyways...so no loss!
