Oh this is so good. Goes to show how clever they are and how well trained we can be. I know it is bad but I also wouldn't have the heart to push the issue. Give him an extra hug from us tonight.

Birds need to be fully exposed to dusk in order for the sleeping triggers to be activated by the deep-brain photoreceptors to start producing melatonin. No melatonin, no drowsiness. That's the way nature made them so they can keep their circadian and circannual cycles synchronized. If they get no sunset, they don't want to go to sleep because, as far as their bodies are concerned, it's still day. The problem is not that he resists his nighty-night, it's that you are not providing the right clue.

If you expose him to a full sunset, he will start vocalizing as soon as the sun starts going down, eat his dinner and, by the time the sky starts to darken, he will be settled down in his favorite roosting spot, ready to go to sleep. As easy as that and like clockwork because Nature doesn't make mistakes, only humans do. Try it, you' ll see. And you will also have a healthier and happier bird.

That sounds so cute...I don't think I'd be able to put him to bed either.
