#1 | | | Introducing, Chico!! Well the Eagle...er, Amazon, has landed!
He arrived about 10am. She put the travel cage in his new cage, opened the door, and out he clambered. Went right to the side of the cage, climbed up, grabbed a perch, and there he was! Since then he's more or less just been sitting there taking it all in. So far barely a peep from the boy, but us walking around the cage or the dog walking by hasn't phased him a mite. If I come close of course, he pins and fans a bit, but there have been no fits or "lemme at 'im" attacks at the cage bars. So far, so good. I grabbed a couple of quick pics (apologies for poor quality/lighting on cage pics, just snaps), so without further ado: Here's Chico (Off the top of my head, I'd say somebody could use a diet!) I really need to get a scale, but being a bit of a weenie I probably wouldn't dare to try to weigh him just yet anyway! He has been on a diet of WalMart Parrot seed mix (lots of sunflower seed and peanuts) with plenty of Walnuts and peanuts for treats. <sigh>
I had to laugh, she told me that when she got him (2 years ago) they were feeding him "those little colored pellet things, but he didn't like them". Probable translation: "It was too expensive or hard to find locally". |

I had to laugh, she told me that when she got him (2 years ago) they were feeding him "those little colored pellet things, but he didn't like them". Probable translation: "It was too expensive or hard to find locally". | The battle rages between those who feed pellets and those who feel they're the bane of the parrots' existence. I'm not a scientist, so what I say I say only from personal experience.
My guys do very well on Roudybush pellets. They also get other things, but the pellets are the basis of their diet. As you can see from the pics, they are all extremely healthy with glowing colors. That does speak somewhat for the validity of a pellet-based diet. It was when I got the overweight Amazon mentioned earlier switched to Roudybush that she dropped the excess grams. It didn't happen overnight, but was a gradual process. At some point her weight simply stopped dropping, leaving her at what my AV calls a very good weight for her.
Needless to say, they all love NutriBerries (which they get as a treat every morning) and most types of fruit and vegetables.
When asked about a pellet diet, my AV (who has a 40-year-old Orange-Wing) said that they seem to be nutritionally sound. HOWEVER, he also said that there are probably necessary trace elements found in fresh foods that have not yet been identified. He recommended supplementing the pellets with fresh vegetables and limited fruits (because of their sugar content). He also brought up the obvious thought of how boring an all-pellet diet would be.
