Default Amozon hormonal advise

My name is rob I am owned by a blue fronted Amazon called Burt. He is about 15 years old and I have been his caretaker for 5-6 months. I am his third caretaker and Burt has so far been brilliant he is very affectionate and likes being involved in every thing we do in the house.

Burt was very aggressive with his last owner and was with them for about 7 years in that time he spent 5 years in isolation. They were terrified of him and were scared that he would hurt someone.

This will be the first hormonal season I have spent with Burt, can any one advise me what to expect. When dose the hormonal season start, how long dose it last, will he get so aggressive that I can’t handle him. Is it written in stone that he will become hormonal? Is it age related. What can I do to minimize and control his hormonal behaviour? I have read that blue fronted males are particularly aggressive in there hormonal time. Is this true?

I would like to get advice from other Amazon owners particularly blue fronted Amazon owners. I hope there is someone out there that can advise me he is a fantastic parrot and I don’t want to jeopardize our relationship.

I, too, want to welcome you to Parrotchatter and also for taking Burt into your home. I have several macaws, but no Amazons, and as Emily said, we do have several members here that have Amazons that own them.

It is probably the time of year. Did the previous owners tell you how often this happens? Many times during mating season they get that way.

Hi every one thanks for the response

Grandma

The previous owners had lost confidence in Burt and said he was constantly aggressive. After a few instances of Burt trying to attack them they tried to reprimand him and train him like a dog. So Burt was scared of them and went into defensive mode every time they went near the cage.
The first attacks from Burt could have been hormonal but after that they probably lost confidence in each other. He is not aggressive with me.

It's obvious, they feared him. You don't and that makes a big difference.

Hello Rob and welcome! I am owned by a Blue Fronted too. I can tell you that Bart could go either way with becoming either very affectionate or very grouchy during breeding season, which will last about a month.

If he becomes aggressive, his tail will flair, eyes will pin, he may even open a wing and stomp his foot. If this happens, get out of the way! You'll get to learn his moods and expressions as time goes on. It may be rough, but when it's all over and he's back to his normal self, you'll realize it really wasn't that bad. And then pray next year never comes. Just kidding.

I hope this helped! If you need anything else, let me know.
