Default She can fly!!!

Hi everyone!

At my request my breeder gave Dozy a moderate clipping. I found out over the weekend that she is still able to fly and very well!!! She flew up and perched on top of my kitchen cabinet. My biggest fear about a flighted bird is escape. If I lived by myself it wouldn't a problem but I have two teenage daughters and a husband. I have stressed to my family the importance of knowing where Dozy is at all times before they are to open the door. I am so paranoid I am thinking about not allowing her out of her cage when I'm not there. Is it possible to keep a flighted bird in a home with a revolving door?

Thanks

Update. Dozy is still extremely quiet and not playful. She is eating and drinking great. She has not wanted to bathe and gets frightened when I try misting her.

She'll settle in more and more over time.

As you can see, clipped doesn't guarantee that Dozy is grounded. So vigilance is needed even with a clipped bird, especially if you can't count on everyone in the household to be aware of coming in and out as they please. Clipped birds can still fly away and a small gust of wind can carry a clipped bird quite a distance.

Can you provide any "layers" in your house - meaning is there an exit to the outside through a buffer, like a back door leading into a garage, which then leads to the outside? We have an attached garage and when the birds are out only the back door is used if anyone has to enter/exit. The front door gets locked to assure that no one just walks in or out. Training your kids and husband will most likely be what you'll have to do.

Try misting way above her so the mist falls down on her instead of misting right at her. I know my two like it much better when I do it that way, if I mist them.

Try getting all silly with her. My two get the biggest kick out of me making a fool out of myself laughing and screaming when I play with toys. This is how I got them both interested in playing.

The layers idea will do wonders! It really does help, as well as till people become adjusted putting a big neon sign on the door that says do you know where the bird is?????

Hi,

Unfortunately, there is no way to create a buffer. I like the neon sign on the door that says do you know where the bird is????? That'g great! That's what I'll do!

thanks!

I use a neon sign sometimes too. If I put the dog outside rather than in the bedroom while the birds are out, I lock the back door and put a sign with bold letters on the back door stating THE BIRDS ARE OUT - meaning don't let the dog running in and to walk her to the bedroom.

As far as bathing goes, she's still settling in, and probably hasn't had much experience with it. It doesn't seem to be uncommon that Greys aren't wild about baths/showers. I have a theory that part of it may come from them being African dry savannah birds rather than rain forest dwellers. In the wild, they're probably more used to dust baths! Tausi isn't a Grey, but he is from the same general area, and he hates baths or showers. Heck, you can't force him to take a bath, and when I mist him, he hunkers there all squinched up acting like he's being punished. That's just my theory, with absolutely no scientific evidence to back it up, and there are some Greys who love showers too.

I hope she just needs time to settle in and get used to them again. When she was with the breeder looked like she was having a ball. My breeder said she would leave a bowl in the sink and she was go in anytime she wanted to bathe. That's so cute!!!!

Aww, it's probably just that she needs some time to get comfortable then. It's quite a change when they come home. Good that she's eating well though.
