Default A Pom-tastic Morning

Ollie is just in complete bliss this morning. Walmart had pomegranates yesterday (finally!) so I picked one up (for an outrageous price). Pomegranates are Ollie's absolute favorite fruit. She devoured it first thing this morning. She also got 1 grape and 2 avicakes...just because her mommy loves her so!

Oh yes, they make a great mess! Ollie only eats them in her cage.

I paid $1.98 for 1 yesterday. They just came in to season so they're more expensive. As time goes on they'll get cheaper and cheaper, until they start to go out of season again and then the price will shoot up. Walmart will stock them until Jan/Feb. This is the earliest I've seen them here. Usually they don't show up until October. Christmas doesn't seem to have an effect on the price here. In December they're usually around .80 a piece.

wow 1.49 for one fruit? sounds very expensive to me. I have to multiply by 7. I never realized it was so expensive. It cost R10 for about a 8-12 in season. It is winter now so my birds are having expensive apples R10 for 1.5kg. In summer they are about R6. Mostly they get naartjies and oranges this time of year.

Angie, 1 pomegranate will last Ollie 5 or 6 days. I just cut out a wedge every morning.

When they have them in my area (for sale in the grocery stores) prices are $2.00 or higher for one - at anytime of the yr. when in stock.

Idea: Any member here who can grow them in your area could probably make some extra income by shipping boxes of them to our members here at a much more reasonable price. I know I would buy boxes of them often for my flock..

I guess the price is ok then. I think in terms of bulk as I need to cut up at least 3-4 fruits per meal just to give everybirdie a taste. It needs 6 for more than a taste. I don't cut a lot at one time cos they waste it then.

great photo.... perfect light and birdie posture (which valo would work WITH me when it comes to photos)

valo loves pomegranate as well - what bothers me is that i have to scrape half of it off the walls when he's done eating
