Default Peanut CRAZY!!! (are to many peanuts bad)

Well, I bought a huge bad of Peanuts for Ira in hope she would eat some solids.

Well i gave her one nothing. well i went to take a shower i left the open bad of peanuts on her playstand on her cage..and left the side door open by mistake.

Well after i was done with the shower i had to use the restroom so thats another 10 minutes..talk about slow..well anyway I got back and she must have ate like 20-30 peanuts. her crops was rock solid full of the nuts. I was happy she ate by herself!!!, but thats all she will eat. she isn't asking for baby fod tho, so is a peanut diet anygood, i can get her to eat apples and oat meal. and scrambled eggs....trying this micro-wave bird food stuff next. how to i get her to eat the bird food like dried bannana's and pellets and what not...

But are TOO many peanuts Bad? i'll have to get a vid of her when she is eating a peanut while watching me eat one..she looks so funny.

WEll the best part was when i opened the door to my room she juped of te cage and ran under my bed, she knew she wasn't supposed to be out. lol

it was a funny moment but still wondering.

Talked to my Breeder...Refering to my other post. she said to feed her blened up oatmeal and warm water. I used apples in the mix. Ira eats it out of a spoon well chuges it down out of a spoon. but no as of today.

An all peanut diet is definitely not good. I would also say, if you're going to feed them (which I don't, see below), 20-30 is entirely too many. They are very high in fats, so you should feed sparingly.

Peanuts are controversial because of mold issues. They grow in the ground, foster mold, and can thus cause problems with Aspergillosis. If you must feed them, feed only human grade (unsalted), and always be checking closely for mold. With that said, you should always check any nuts or seeds you feed for mold.

Try almonds. Those are Ollie's favorite.

Yes, that is too many peanuts. Sorry, I know it is a joy to watch them enjoy them, but that is far too many. I've watched a bird nearly die from diabetes and a bad diet. Zons are prone to diabetes.. Not sure about greys, but even if they aren't that is too many peanuts. Watching a poor sick bird fall off the perch and have to be rushed to the AV gave me new light to paying careful attn to diet.
I give baby 1 peanut tonite as a special treat for riding the perch around the living room.
If the crop is still hard in the am, I might call the AV to let them know and see if they have any advice.
Hope this helps,
Mark

I feed peanuts but only human grade ones and only one or two a week. Well actually my husband feeds them. Its the only interaction he has with the parrots. lol

The sum for peanuts is 1 nut for 1 bird in 1 day. If unshelled you need to peep inside that they are good and mold free. Active aviary birds can have little more but real nuts such as almonds are better.
