Thumbs up My Ruby

Here's just a quick overview of my darling Ruby and how she looked when we got her and how she looks ... 15 minutes ago.
For those of you interested in reading her story (lots of reading):
http://rubyhuesofgreystone.blogspot.com/

June 2004

My sweety had started to mutilate herself some but we got that under control fairly fast. Lots and lots of attention is what did the trick, it seemed that is one thing she never really got from anyone and was always one of the ones in the background, forgotten.
And when she grows up she's going to be "Thiiiiiis Big."

In the years we have had her she feathered out completely and removed them again only to let them grow back. There are, as you will see, many places on her chest that will never grow anything back, but that's Ok with both Katrin and I as we are both Nudists at heart, lol.

March 2007

And here she is wanting more of that attention and not getting it fast enough, so she resorts to her "Toenail flick" which drives me batty btw.

And that's our Ruby.

Oh looks can be deceiving here!!! You try that and you will be less one nose.

We have finally been able to scritch her head without getting bitten after a very long time. At first there was nothing that we could not do with her, until she became more ... self aware and realized that she actually had a say in things, so she started to nip.
Perhaps we should have done things differently at this stage but we thought that any signs of an actual personality showing through had to be given a chance to develop.
She is still shy and leery of things but we have made progress by leaps and bounds in my opinion. She plays, she screams, she swings and flaps and drives me crazy, just like a good Parrot is supposed to do.

We are in no hurry, as we have all the time left us in our lives to get there, and if we don't, why then, I had a most pleasurable traveling companion along the way.

Oh man those first pictures are really sad, almost painful to look at. Poor girl! But she looks a MILLION times better now! She is gorgeous, even naked!

Thanks Mike. I did read Ruby's whole story the other day when you posted elsewhere on this site. It made me cry actually. Ruby looks just like my Tully, (except he's never actually made himself bleed). In fact that's why my five year old started calling him "TullyBear" because he's so fuzzy!

I am trying soooo hard not to take Tully's plucking personal. I know I didn't cause it, but I just thought if I loved him hard enough, which is something he hasn't known since he left the breeder, that he would just stop. It's been hard to accept that he may always be naked. Makes me feel like a bad mom. You have such a great attitude about it though. It makes me aspire to be more like that. Anyway, I just wanted to say thanks. Your and Ruby's story has helped me to relax a bit. I appreciate it more then you know.

I remember when you were getting ready to bring Ruby home and how excited Katrin and you were. Ruby reminds me so much of Meko, pluckers all seem to be alike in some way or another they share a bond.
Thank you for taking her in and giving her all the love that you and Katrin have, you guys are the best. You've done wonders with her.
