The only way to know gender and age is by surgical sexing. Surgical sexing does carry a risk.

Or, DNA. It only costs around $30.

As far as I know, there is no test that tells you how old a parrot is. The best you can do is guess from his physical condition but young parrots can look old if they were not taken care of properly and older parrots can still look pretty good when they have so that's not accurate at all. As to sexing, DNA from blood will do it.

The age of an African Grey can be estimated by the shading of the eye. It starts out dark grey and will turn lighter into shades of deep yellow to almost transparent yellow as it gets older. What shade are your birds eyes?

That method of guessing the age really does not indicate anything after the developmental stage. My African Grey had very pale eyes by the time he was 5 years old, and they did not change color thereafter.

Thats the age of maturity. So at least ypu can tell if they are over 5 with this method. But guessing if its 7 or 49 is a mystery.
