Thanks so much for not overreacting to her flight mishap. IT's so important to get that exercise and she'll be alot more confident like she is now with her full wings. And I agree Greys can be clumsy and being clipped not having full balance doesnt help.

It'll be fun watching her progress.
She hase a blue one too! I feel very good in my decision to grow her wings out and keep her flighted. It was awful having to make a decision one way or the other and not know which would be best. Know I know. Thanks!!!

I have a question for you.

Is it normal for one day they don't seem to eat as much as another. It's weird. Yesterday I came home and her bowl of fruits and veges were almost gone. Today I get home and it looks like nothing was touched.

Oh my goodness, Ollie used to give me indigestion. Some days she will eat every pellet in her bowl. Other days it looks like she hasn't even touched them. She still does this. It seems to have a bit to do with her activity level (as well as what other foods she eats that day, but that one is more obvious). On days she really attacks her toys and flies around a lot she eats quite a bit more. Some days are more relaxed, involve a lot of preening and sitting and talking, and those days she seems to eat less.

Ollie also rarely eats when I'm not home. As soon as I walk in the door her head goes into her pellet dish.

Wordybirdy, not sure how many hours you are gone but wanted to let you know that fresh foods will get bacteria after a couple hours especially depending on the temperature and the contents.

So if you can, try and remove them by then. Some people put apple cider vinegar on them but I dont think that works for a full work day.

The only "safe" live thing (fresh) would be sprouts. Cuz they just keep growing and you are safe not rinsing them for 8 hours. And they're usually gone QUICK anyway!

Great news she's eating her fresh foods!

I work 8-5 so I am gone most of the day.

She LOVES her spouts. When I come home I like to give her a warm meal. Something with Beak Appetit, pasta, rice or beans mixed with veges especially if she doesn't do so well with the veges during the day. She sifts thru and picks out what she likes and tosses the rest. She won't eat pellets. If she could live on sprouts and sprouts alone I'm sure she would be very happy but I don't think sprouts alone is a balanced enough diet.

Do NOT leave fresh foods in her cage for any longer than 3 hours at a time. I remove Ollie's after an hour or 2. Getting a bird to eat pellets can be difficult, but it's definitely possible. I can be gone for long periods of time during the day, so Ollie has to have a dry food available at all times. Also, I want her on a diet that is easy for people who are caring for her provide. An all fresh diet may be difficult for somebody who is caring for Dozy while you're away to implement. Especially if they only stop in to care for her once or twice a day- in which case it would be nearly impossible. A base of pellets or seed can be a lifesaver. IMO, you should really try to get her to accept pellets.

Maybe not BUT it's a living food with the best of all things in it. So if I had to pick ONE SINGLE food only it'd be sprouts. Grains, vegs and beans can all be sprouted and you have a complete grouping anyway. 'cept fruits....(beans need at least a half inch tail I dont sprout them I cook them to avoid gi problems).

There was a study at Texas A&M I think...that they fed sprouts only to some birds with lipomas and they improved....I heard that on a feeding list. Big birds, too, I think they were "Toos

If you read/find my Sprouts post I listed a bunch of them that are veggies...greens....not just grains so you can order them. And where to order from. And even when they just are "soak seed" meaning just cracked with no tails they are extra potent LOL.....The vegs only need about 8 hours.....

I think she's doing great with her diet, she's only a baby and still learning. In the wild or in her original home if she were parent raised with her flock in tact she'd be learning from her flock. Same with bathing or playing or anything, really.

Karen eats WITH her guys to encourage them to try things so you can do that too. Your friends will laugh at her having her own place at the table

Do you have any suggestions on how to get her to eat pellets?

Thanks

I agree with you Camille. It's so important that we have back up things that are manageable for other people. One reason I let the Pletts have the pellets, too.

And an all fresh diet you just dont know about their vitamins and minerals etc.

The whole food thing is so tricky and confusing!
