Default Cage sizes for African Greys

I have always heard/read that greys are the exception to the rule when it comes to the addage "the bigger, the better." It has been my opinion that a grey does better in a cage NO LARGER than 36" wide. From what I have read, they feel more secure in a cage that is adequate for their size, and no more.

What is your opinion on this?

I think it depends on the individual grey. I know Ollie, and she would have absolutely no qualms with a huge cage. Her next one is going to be a big SS one. The demensions of hers now are 32 across, 24 wide, and 30 tall. I don't know just how big I will go with her next one, mainly because she doesn't spend a lot of time in it.

Also, if you have a young grey and put them in a large cage, they will obviously grow up completely used to it- just like any bird. I've seen plenty of videos of aviary greys in huge flights outside, and they look very happy and healthy!

Well, My guys have rather large cages. Sydney is in a macaw cage.
However, I do see one thing with the 3 greys that I dont see in Harley or Ollie...When they are scared, they jump off thier perches, which because of the cage size, sometimes isnt pretty.

Kathie.........I can only comment with much experience regarding flighted birds and IME regarding them: "Bigger the better" is still the rule of thumb.

Joel - for flighted birds - you bet! Us Northerners don't have the luxury of having our birds outside. This was meant more for the inside bird who is clipped - "house" birds so to speak.

Scarlett's cage is 36x23x30 I believe. My breeder was concerned that was too big and she wouldn't feel secure. She won't spend a ton of time in it, only on Mondays and Wednesdays when they are in cages from 10-6:30.

I think it depends on the individual and how what they were raised in. Ehco's cage is huge. It has earned the name of 'Echo's Mansion' for a reason. It will not fit through a door way. His cage is a corner cage, and it truley huge. from corner to corner across, it is 57". From the back corner to the front, it is 43". It is also 57" high in usable cage space for him. This is the cage is has had since he was a baby, so this is his home. Here is a pic of it:

If you look torwards the left, you can see a blurry image of him. I have yet to get any other pics of it (this one I got from the previous owner), but just so you can get an idea.

I is really easy to clean-thankgoodness. If it wasn't, I would be having to take it apart just to hose it down. You can just wipe it down with a damp rag, and everything comes off. The previous owner really wanted to give him everything- and I must say, she did! He has more toys than I can count. But, knowing me and bird fairs, there will be more Poor Harley, she saw the cage and thought it was her's. It realy could be her's, but Echo loves it!

It really seems like Echo was well taken care of, I am sure it was hard for her to let him go. But I know you will spoil him as well! He is a lucky bird! And I defintley know what you mean about the bird fairs, I could go broke at them! I just love to get my babies new stuff!
