You're doing so great with her Jac! Your friend is lucky that she has somebody like you to watch Bunny for her. Loved the pictures!

Question Downside

There is a downside happening here.
Besides her long [almost endless] conversations with the Budgies - who she obviously is curious about. She flew down the hall this afternoon & last night she & Rio kept calling to each other for over a half hour.

The poor little thing is pretty stressed - as you can imagine. Everything is so new to her. She trembles so. I let her out a lot - not too much more than she's used to - well maybe a little more. I stay with her or work in the kitchen when she's out.

You probably read that she started plucking this winter.
I've been keeping an eye on that. The silly feather is now just a bare quill & there's another one beside it just the same & one on the other wing.

I've been assessing the feathers overall. They aren't groomed all that well - kind of split apart even around her neck - like the feather won't stay together. Then she preens a lot under her wings. Under them it looks like down & looks kind of sweaty - stuck together.

I encouraged her to fly today. She flew once yesterday & this morning when the telephone repair man was here - frightened him. So I got her to fly 3 more times to her cage. I'm hoping the activity will take her mind off her feathers.

She's very interested in everything & seems OK overall. I looked at the local pet store today for an object for her to play with, on top of the cage & came up empty. I'll perhaps look tomorrow as well. What would anyone suggest for a plucker to keep them busy?

I also noticed some skin attached to some down feathers on the ground. Could this be normal? Or is it typical of a plucker?

I just hope this visit doesn't add to her plucking.

No Jac, skin on the down is not normal! That would be mutilation but it doesnt sound like she's doing that. Did she get soaked when you offered her the water bowl? They can get a little ratty looking if they havent had a good soaking for a while. Mr Buddy trembles also. He has been here almost 2 years and still sits shaking, I cant figure why. Try not to over think it all. Greys are curious buggers. It might do you better to stand at the budgie room door with Bunny on your arm and do an introduction by distance.

She got really wet that one time. She's shown no interest in another bath - I offer the bowl each day. I brought out the sprayer & she didn't like it at all - I had hoped she'd like an under the wing bath - like Mom's Tiel.

Thanks for the heads up on the trembles. She does it lots & sometimes I think its like Rio's excitement trembles. But it is also a frightened or worried thing, I'm pretty sure.

There are no bare patches. But her chest is more than half exposed down. I worried about the 'skin' in the end of the one down feather - may be a skin condition?

I really am not comfortable with the Budgies meeting her. They are much quicker than she is, but I don't want anyone flying into walls or windows. We'll see. If she was a permanent member then they'd meet - very carefully, maybe with them both in cages.
