Default Bowl Tossing

Ok, so here's what my crazy greay-bird is doing. In the mornings, I give her her seed/pellet/dried fruits and veggies mix. Within 5 minutes, she has carefully tossed the bowl to the bottom of the cage where she proceeds to eat it from the bottom of the cage. 95% of the time nothing has spilled out of her bowl. But I don't understand why she own't eat her food from the top of the cage like a normal bird. I know this sounds crazy, but she is on;y eating her food from the floor of the cage. I've even started just putting her fruit and veggie bowls down there too as she tossed them as well.

I know greys are ground feeders, but do any of your birds do this? I really worry about her getting sick and such (even though I change the paper daily) but still...I know I sound crazy, lol!

I dont have a solution, one of the conures has decided to remove dishes and throw, I have now tied the ring with wire and the dish is forced in. They are doing this to the swivel feeders in the aviary.

Nope, Ollie doesn't just eat off the bottom, although she will sometimes go down for something she's dropped.

Solution: Use a grate! They're not fun to clean, but if Echo isn't afraid to poop in her cage then I would be worried about the food dropping in the poop and her eating it.

Camille,

I think that's the only solution! I was using one for a while and then with the water restrictions, I stopped. I'm just so freaked out about her getting sick! I might have to come up with something to secure the bowl in place...hmmmm

That may not stop her. I posted a video a while back of Ollie "reseeding the earth". She'll swipe her beak through her bowl so fast and with such force that food just goes flying. Not only does it end up at the cage bottom, but it also lands several feet out on the floor, and on occasion, in my bed!

LOL, that's really funny! Sometimes greys can be crazy. Everyone percieves them as calm, serene birds. Echo is completly opposite! She is constantly moving!

Dominique, you may want to try a large ceramic crock on the grate so she can perch on it and eat if she insists on eating on the bottom. At least that way with you placing a dish down there you can select a spot where she won't poop in the food when she's up on her perches.

I'll try that. I have a large ceramic crock that she can't toss from, so maybe I can use that...
