It will be exciting - I hope it all goes well. I know I'd be a nervous wreck - hoping for the best.

Congratulations, Claybird is going to a wonderful home!

We have had a few similar problems with our Jardine's, Molly. She has been here just over a year and still barely remembers she can fly. It's a big disability for her cause I think she desperately wants to, but when she takes off it always ends in a crash being such a weak flier, so she marches back to her cage grumbling to herself. We have found that when she crashes it really discourages her and she won't try again for quite a while. We have decided to put up ropes across the room so she can move around more and get to know some more suitable landing spots incase she decides to take off again. Seeing as Claybird will step up (Molly doesn't hence the ropes across the room), you could take her around the house to show her some places she can land if she ever gets the urge to take off. Molly also didn't like new toys very much when we got her, and didn't know what to do with them. But we found that if she had just a few carefully selected toys in at a time to play with she would come round eventually and destroy them all. She still doesn't like a cluttered cage though, makes her very cross indeed.

Anyway, good luck with Claybird! And I'm sure everything will be fine, you are a great parront!

Thanks abc for your suggestions.

So today Eve and I walked over to Claybirds house for a visit. Eve was as calm as a cucumber, taking the whole thing is stride. The first thing Eve did when we got there was to sit and preen. Claybird was very guarded, but very curious. And she was a bit aggressive, which I also think is good! Claybird was trying to defend her territory. I like that because, for a grey I would rather have had her stand up for her self than run back into her cage in fear and panic. After about ten minutes Claybird came to the conclusion that Eve really didn't care about her cage or her for that matter. This was good because claybird resumed her normal activities. And Eve sat on the back of a chair and hung out. Every once in a while Claybird would look at Eve to make sure Eve was still ignoring her. Than Claybird decided to puff up and lean in Eves direction. I think she was trying to show eve that she was a confidant bird who will not take any crap. Eve started to preen and claybird just watch eve for 5 minutes. Than Claybird decided to join in the preening! Afterwards they ate some toast and just continued to hang out. A couple of times Eve got spooked (new place) and flew to Claybirds cage. That wasn't so good. Nobody attacked, but Claybird got a little scared and tried to fly. Claybird has never been clipped, but also has never flown, nor can she. She hit the ground like a rock. Poor bird. She really is a rather weak bird. She does not have a good grip, and has almost no muscle tone, and is very underweight. I mean very under weight! I will have my work cut out for me in terms of her over all health. She is not sick or anything. She just doesn't eat much and has a hard time holding her weight up. She looses most of her weight when she lays eggs, and it takes a lot to gain it back, but she IS 30+ years old and STILL lays 2 clutches a year. And for most of those years she lived with Clay who was a heavy smoker and was also not let out of the cage. Again.....he didn't know any better. She does love her pellets though! She made the seed pellet change like it was nothing! So far so good! I will get some pics soon!!!!! I didn't want the first visit to be to crazy. I will be going their again with Eve next week, and than I will go with Poe. After all that, Claybird will visit my house. By then, she should be ready to come to my home permently.

Sounds good, maybe if they friends Eve will have something to feed, when he needs to feed everything.

Sounds great so far - at least the flying onto Clay's cage wasn't worse.

Glad to hear Eve behaved himself. I'll be interested to hear how Poe does.

Eve and Clay, parish the thought but, they can't hybridize right? Aren't their species too far apart but they can form a relationship despite the species barrier right?

no they can not, vasa's have a closer genetic tie to Too's, than other African birds. But even if that was not the case, a vasa could not breed with a different species regardless. They are their own species, in other words they are not like conures or amazon where their is a large number of different species within the group. Not to mention that hemi-penis, that would be enough to scare any other species away!

Small update, sorry no pics yet.Have to find the camera. But me and Poe's dad went over to my friends house and claybird liked him, and ate a bunch of different foods we had handed her. She was whistling and meowing for us. So cute

I am wondering how this turned out? I have some experience with an older Grey that was not on a good diet. Let me know if you want some tips that my vet gave me that really worked. I hope that the transition has gone smoothly.

Good on you! Sure it will go well with thought, patience, and lotsa heart. We never wanted seven cats either but that's what we ended up with a few years ago because they kept just moving in...we're down to three now, more managable. We had personality clashes, fights over "thats my spot", I get fed before you...and they say we don't know what it's like to have kids! Somehow you'll manage.
