Default Do you feed wild birds in the summer

Do you feed the wild bird's in the summer also?

I feed mine all year round. I have so much extra food here, I like to be able to offer someone a meal. I find that the birds come to the feeders all year long also.

I have so many wild birds in my yard! We have house finches, house sparrows, a bonded Cardinal pair, doves, Mockingbirds, American Robins, and a few other types. They have food and water from the pond all year long plus a bird bath. I also give them the remains of the Ultimate Blend from the fids. Even the wild rabbits eat that! My yard is like a sanctuary almost. Very secluded and surrounded by a living fence of Nigra Arbovites which are almost 12ft tall. They are all welcome there, all year long!

my feeding the wild birds isn't done directly. They get the left overs from my birds.

I too feed year-round (left-overs). Wasn't a choice though in the poll?

Not as much as we used to. I don't subscribe to the theory that you shouldn't because it encourages the migratory species to stay around too long (malarky). The problem here is just too many squirrels. We've found that if we slack off in the spring and early summer, the squirrels tend to head back into the woods. If we keep the seed out, the squirrels never leave, chew their way into the house, nest and have babies, etc. We also have some problems with Raccoons in the spring and summer. Can't tell you how many suet feeders we've lost, and regular feeders destroyed. The back yard is fenced in for the dog, and I'm always worried about Coons getting in there and then if the dog goes out at night....not a pretty picture.

Edit to add: We sure used to enjoy watching the parent birds bring the little ones to the feeders after fledging though. I miss that.

Yes, we love to spoil the wild birds too! They have trouble with those mac nuts though! LOL

I also don't buy special wild bird food for them, they eat the parrots leftovers.

Nate, we generally don't have that problem, but I did have a Raccoon incident here late last fall. I was putting out unbelievable amounts of food and scratching my head everyday to see the feeders wiped out. Then I saw the fattest coon waddling away from the feeder at dusk one day. We did stop feeding for a while until he moved on.

Sounds beautiful Leigh! Did your Robin eggs ever hatch out?
