Default New life in your home will likely...

not only bring new concerns for your new addition, but also if you already have a bird it can be a shock to them as well. We have alot of members who add to their flock, what would you recommend or what have you done to ensure they both have a smooth transition?

Default Re: New life in your home will likely...

I had some problems. The first was having a poor quarantine.
They called out to each other constantly - our place is so small there was no way to separate the sound. Laker flew into the living room where he normally does not go & they met.

Mostly we observed & made sure they both were getting attention.
They had a bit of a honeymoon when they where finally allowed to be out together. I think it lasted a week. Laker seemed very excited but I think over all he liked the 1st arrangement - where the baby was in a place he could get away from. It wasn't very long before he was hiding from the baby & not returning contact calls. He would go into the baby's cage to get away too as Rio avoided his cage in the daytime.

When they were getting along [at about month 4] we tried both in one cage at night but the 1st bird clung to walls and didn't sing his happy night time songs or snack. Because the cages are small - like the Budgies - they are best separate + the 2 cages are part of their daytime gym & restaurant.

My birds don't play but they do like to chew the same things & eat out of the same bowl no matter that they have 2 of everything. They will fight over a treat from me & I walk away as soon as they start & try again later.

They've been together a year & are very good buddies now. The baby has learned to entertain himself when Laker is antisocial. Sometimes they wear themselves out with their activities & then I am really happy we got the 2nd bird.

It may seem funny to talk about Budgies like this but they are very entertaining and busy. They are a lot of fun alone but having more is more fun.
