I am not sure it will be so easy with grey they seem to be missing the homing instinct. I have heard about 1 grey that does recall. It is the south american birdies that recall best, conure, zon and macaw. I started by calling him inside the house and then leaving his sight so he had to come and find me. He was at 100% recall over a few months before I went to a big aviary and then finally the great outdoors. The most difficult part was teaching him to come down, he can now make a dive bomb like an eagle straight down on the vertical and land without crashing. He is lazy so he chooses not to fly circles above me. Mostly I put him in a tree, run away and call him, or I send him up high into a tree and practice recalls. After a fly off by Pinky and Caesar the other day I am now putting time into recalls with them, they only coming if they feel like it so it will be long time till I can fly them. Pinky did manage a perfect landing to me on the roof the other day. 100% recall means, come now, as soon as I call, obey instantly not finish the bird stuff first. It is critical when going outside that they will obey whether they like or not. You have to find the best treat to reward with, and then reward instantly. I have heard of using clicker to help with this, I did not. I would think that it is a good idea to recall train a bird anyhow even if not ever going to take outside.

Hi 2horse,

That is very awesome. I'm sure it takes a lot of patience. How great it would be to be able to take your bird to a park to fly free and know that they will come back to you on command. That is really awesome!!!

I enjoy this a lot. He gets to come so many places because of this. He loves the trees in the garden.

Ollie is 100% at recall in the house as long as I include the word "nut" after the cue word. I don't think I will ever feel safe taking her outside though. Maybe far into the future, after I've taken to her to indoor gyms or arenas for practice. And only out on my parents farm where there is nothing for miles around. It'd be very hard for her me to lose her!

I want to teach sky my irn this. First I'd like to teach him to come to me on command, since his wings are clipped, then transform that into flying to me on command. how does that sound to you guys?

I think with time and practice they start to leave it alone.

My GW on the other hand will leave it alone, until he wants it off. Then he breaks the clips in about 3 seconds flat... oh boy. What a false sense of security it is on him.

I think it just feels kind of weird for them. Keke will leave it alone most of the time and then she will pull on it but stops when we tell her to leave it aloe. She is starting to associate it with going outside and there are times she doesn't want it on all we have to say is do you want to go outside she will most often stop avoiding it and wait for you to put it on.
