Re: Two pictures of my birdroom No, I don't lock them up for the night, they don't have cages, they perch and roost and go to sleep where they like but they all have their 'own' spot where they roost every night. The only ones in cages are the canaries (domesticated for too long and lost some of their survival instincts and they are much too delicate to be flying around the bigger birds anyway), a handicapped cardinal and the handicapped amazon because they can't perch normally.
Right now I have 63 birds: 17 canaries, 6 lovebirds, 12 cockatiels, 9 budgies, 3 senegals, 5 doves, 2 umbrella cockattos, 2 mini-macaws (male is Hahn's, female is Noble), 1 eclectus, 2 amazons (one YC male and one RL female) and 4 greys (3 CAG, 1 TAG).
But, as in every single rescue or sanctuary, the population fluctuates.... when these pictures were taken Carolina was still here but she is now in a new home where she can receive the one on one attention she craved so much. And poor Elsie turned up dead one morning when I went into the birdroom, right under her favorite roosting spot, and I will never know what killed her because even a necropsy showed nothing wrong with her. And Virginia, a Northern Cardinal that doesn't metabolize protein well went to a rehabber that specializes and has a great setup for passerines so I was able to take in the minis. There is only so much room so, as much as I regret having to turn down birds, I cannot take any new ones unless a 'vacancy' opens up. I now have a baby dove and four baby budgies in the medium size flight cage that Virginia used to inhabit and once they are big and strong enough to be released into the birdroom, I might be able to take in another bird. We'll see. |
