F32T8/TL/950 PHILIPS
F32T8/950 (F32T8/TL950) PH 32W T8 48" 209056 PHILIPS 5000K LAMP 98 CRI

98 CRI is, I think, the best you can buy. The higher the CRI, the better for our little fidren.

Here is a pic in the background:

Yes Home Depot doesnt carry the fixture in the stores, you have to order it from them online.

Camille awesome shot ! You mentioned about the distance...according to Patrick Thrush (the only documented study I know of) he says keep it between 2 and 4 feet away. His study and other info is on a site google birds and lighting.

I keep mine 4 ft away from the cage top and hung it on ceiling swag hooks like yours from Home Depot in the chandelier department.

For anyone interested in sources for 4 ft. 2 tube shoplight fixtures with electronic ballasts or the elusive phillips F32T8/TL950 bulbs in small quantities, I have a couple of links.
Performance Plus Shoplight This is a nice light, very attractive for a "shoplight". Comes with chains to hang it.
Phillips F32T8/TL950 or 950 I was able to buy 2 bulbs from here.

Also found these bulbs which aren't Phillips, but appear to have the exact same specs: F32T8/TRITEN950/LONGLIFE

Disclaimer: I have no interest in any of these companies, I just bought stuff from them.

Stupid question but i have no knowledge of this stuff...
When it comes to hanging fixtures, do they hang and plug into an outlet?
Also... if a person was unable to get a hanging fixture- what is the next best thing? I rent and putting holes in the ceiling is a big no-no, so looking into a good alternative setup for the fids.

The one I have has plugs right into the wall. Actually, it plugs into a timer, which plugs into the wall. There are standing lamps you can buy, but I don't know anything about them. What Sally has may work for you.

Yeah I was looking into the featherbrite seatups for my 2 dometop cages, but Higgins has a playtop cage that cannot be taken off so I am looking into the best next thing for his cage. I guess a clamp lamp is the only way to go for him?

There are floor lamps with moveable heads that can be shown in the side of the cage ...I've seen pictures of a few people who have them.

I've seen these as well. I've read a lot of literature, and read a lot from Joel and others who have studied the subject of full spectrum lighting (for birds - which isn't quite the same as generalized f/s lighting) and the consensus seems to be that none of the "portable" or "compact" solutions really do the job. I'm sure they are better than nothing, but not ideal.

If you do some googling, and search for posts on Bird Boards, you'll find that what is most often recommended is a 4 foot 2 tube light (like a shop light fixture) hung directly over the cage, usually with chains. Typically they plug right into an outlet, and usually have a pull-chain switch. Also, one with an electronic ballast is highly recommended since magnetic ballasts cause the irritating fluorescent flicker that so irritates many, and would presumably bother a bird as well. They are also much more energy efficient than a magnetic ballast. The overwhelming recommendation for full spectrum bulbs for these fixtures is the Philips F32T8/TL/950, since it has the proper color temperature (5000 Kelvin) and highest cri rating (98). These ratings represent the closest we have come to simulating true sunlight. I've also seen these bulbs highly praised by artists and photographers striving for proper color rendition. The only other bulb I've found with matching specs. is the Triten one that I mentioned in my earlier post. I bought a couple, but have not tried them yet. As mentioned in previous posts, these bulbs can be hard to find in small quantities less than a case lot.

These are just the conclusions I've reached from reading, I'm no expert!

The hole that the swag thing makes is really small. It just looks big because the hook is big but it has a little screw underneath.

Check it out at Home Depot by the ceiling fans they have the swag hooks like Camille has in her photo. It only takes a teeny bit of spackle to fill that hole.

Other than hanging you 'd have to build something to hang the light "from" I'd say. Like a "carport" LOL. (The lamp has to shine down on them it can't go sideways since it misses the top of the head that way)

I tried the standing and desk lamps and couldnt find a single way to use them. I even have a pass through bar but it didnt work. Do you have a chandelier in the dining room? You could but the featherbright in there and the cage where the table is for a couple of hours.

Thankfully only a couple months till it's warm enough to stick them in the screened window!

OK, I'm reading all this about lighting and I can understand it for darkened bird rooms or folks up north but I keep my birds in the living room between a wall of glass doors and a big bay window with no shades on either. I roll their cages out to the screened porch 2-3 times a week (when it is warm and not raining like this week). I don't think I need any other auxillary lighting, do you?
