I agree with you Camille, Play Tops are a pain. Quito's Qage has a top grate that is attached, so that's a plus. I don't like the looks of Ollie's top grate at all, you can see where a bird could get their head stuck very easily! Can't believe they'd design it like that. I have the top tray stored here in the computer room, since as you said, it blocks too much light. She is on the top sometimes while I'm cleaning but since she's pretty small, any poop falling through isn't too much of an issue. I can see where it would be with Ollie!

Tausi's cage is one of those Victorian tops that opens, but I leave it down and latched at all times. It's fairly heavy and doesn't open real easy and again, Tausi's not that big.

Chico's cage is a dome top, and is bolted together at the top. Definitely the most secure, and I think the best design. There's plenty of area there to hang toys and Boings from. He climbs around the top upside down just fine. Only thing is its quite tall, and with a territorial bird (like a grouchy and hormonal DYH) if he were to climb up on top outside it could be quite an adventure to get him back down again. You'd need a step ladder to reach the center of the top. I'd probably opt to just wait for him to climb back in on his own.

Stainless is definitely the way to go if you can afford it. Probably cheaper in the long run anyway, I can see where these powder-coated ones aren't going to last too many years.

The only problem with simply taking the gyms off the play tops- The top grate isn't attached to the cage (at least on mine its not), it just sits there. Meaning that when I hang heavy things, like Ollie's boing, the grate bounces and moves A LOT. It's just not very sturdy. Actually, a bird more motivated to escape than Ollie could easily get out, or get their head stuck in the process. It's much safer with the tray staying in it. Maybe it's just my cage that's made like this...would anybody else with playtops confirm or deny this?

Here are some pictures to help explain:

Lifting the top grate up- it's not very heavy by the way, especially so if I don't have very heavy things hanging from the top.

I feel that the dometop is much safer in this respect. And like I said earlier, if the cage is already huge, then cutting out a few corners isn't going to make any difference, IMO.
Oh wow yeah I see what you mean. And I agree the dome isnt "that" slanted that you'd loose much space.

I was looking at a Kings (for us) that was only 36 high and it had this fancy dippy all over top and you had to subtract about 6 inches in height by the time you got done.

I'd totally go for quality and Stainless dome over other priorities, I agree. I guess there's different quality of stainless too so it's alot to research.

Especially when it costs as much as a used car

But that mammoth one IS really big LOL. I wish they'd make them W I D E.

I cant understand why the bird cage business is so BEHIND THE TIMES on that. It's very frustrating. Especially when you cant even find anything wide enough side to side no matter what the price.

For the Parrotlets, I'll probably get the double breeder its 64 wide and they can zoom around in there.

Good luck shopping guys!

I couldn't have said it better than Cindy did in her first post and I agree with most of what everyone else has said in this thread also. Bigger the better is the way to go. Definitely the rule IMO & IME.

I would purchase the new Behemoth MaCaw cage for your Grey - I use it now and keep 2 or three of them in it. I wish they offered a S.S. model like this.

I had no idea there were different qualities of SS. How do you go about researching this? How do you know what's best?

Camille, Bird Cages 4 Less - Free Catalog - Free Shipping sells Harley's corner cage. It's powder coated, but I saw a SS one (can't remember where) today. It was really nice and it's a flat top. Echo was in that one but for some reason, started these weird behaviors (like scratching the door and attacking bars ?) so we switched and there has been no problems. But, Ollie might love it, lol!
