Default Ivy's Breakfast Mix

many thanks to beatriz cazeneuve for her awesome "gloop" recipe. i did some shopping at Barry Farm Foods - Your Unique Resource for Organic and Unusual Groceries and ended up with this.

each is a one pound bag. i list all the ingredients i used below. they are all organic and happy

first we have 1/2 cup of the wild rice/brown rice bix and about 1/8 a cup of red lentils.

next we have 1/4 cup of each of these :

Kamut
Triticale
Soft White Wheat Berries
Spelt
Buckwheat
Hard Red Spring Wheat Berries
Barley
Oats (Whole Groats)

might i add, this hardly made a dent in each bag. i was actually worried at first that this wouldn't make much. i was so wrong lol.

The rice and lentils are cooked for 20 minutes. I cooked the grains in a separate pot for 20 minutes as well. Next time, I will cook the grains closer to 30 minutes I think.

1/4 cup each of :

Whole Grain Pasta Elbows
Golden Flax Seed
Amaranth

This is added to the rice/lentil mixture, stirred in, covered, and then let to cool.

All is mixed together to form a quite tasty meal! This is one of those long ziploc tupperwares, I am guessing maybe 6-8 cups of food? This goes great with cinnamon and fresh bananas, but you can mix in any spices/fruits/veggies you want! I keep it refrigerated and heat some up in the microwave each day.

I've been eating this in the mornings with ivy. I love it! But so far, she is like "uhhhhhh NO!" I hope I can get her to like it, it's super healthy and I have a TON of it left to cook

I think I paid around $70 total for all the stuff (i also got 2 bags of unsulfered banana chips, a few pounds of whole wheat veggie rotini, and some unsulfured fruit mix). it's a LOT of food! and it makes even more when it's cooked. Barry Farm is an amazing place with amazing prices. They were a bit slow to ship, but the quality is well worth the wait! Even if I can't get Ivy interested, I will be back to shop for myself!

This is exactly what I prepare for my birds. It's a great way to get them to eat the veggies. Then I spoon the hot sauce over it, and they do gobble it up. All of them. It took a while to convert two of them, but I put a small spoon of seed in their cup first (while they watched me) and then spooned the gloop over it. Then I studded the top with a few sunflower seeds and pine nuts. That hooked them. I cook it once or twice a week, and in between give them another recipe, a no cook one. The only problem is my husband discovered the hot sauce (with fresh habanero and poblano peppers and chili pepper flakes) I make for the birds and now I have to hide it from him

I'm going to try the hot sauce! Ruby loves jalepenos!

i haven't had any luck getting ivy to eat grains. my worry is that they are too small for her and she's not interested. she picks all the fruits and veggies out! i haven't tried anything hot with ivy, maybe i will see if she'd like that. so far, she prefers sweet things.

My macaws prefer spicy hot, but sometimes I mix the 'gloop' with applesauce, blueberries, diced apples and pomegranate fruits. They love these little pomegranates. But Francesca (BG macaw) would not touch it for a long time. Then she started picking out the sunflower seeds, the little pine nuts, and now she eats it. Without the hot sauce, they toss the broccoli. So every day it's another little baby step. The good thing about gloop is I like to eat it, so it never goes to waste.

Emily, no luck here either. I now add them to my Birdie Bread. My recipe seems to be turning into a catch all, for all the things they won't eat. They end up eating grains and veggies if I hide them in the bread recipe. Go figure.
