Talking Birdie Bread for Amateur Bakers

... like myself

I found this on another website. It is really simple to make (which is good for me since I'm not cooking often and therefore out of practice - life as a student without roommates will do that for you), and Valo and Bella just love it! (even BF is now baking birdie bread... )

So, I figured I'd share for those who also like it simple:

1 cup of plain yellow corn meal
1 teaspoon of baking powder
1 egg
1/2 cup of apple sauce (I use unsweeted, organic)
1/2 cup of apple juice (pasteurized)
1/2 cup of peas, broccoli etc - also very popular, (bell) peppers
1/3 cup of grated carrot
1/3 cup of cooked white or brown rice
1/3 cup of pellets or seeds

preheat oven to 350deg. mix above incredients well, and spread in a 8x8 glass pan. bake for 35min. DONE

i cut it into 1-2cm squares and the freeze it. the squares can be thawed seperately by heating in the microwave for 30sec.

valo and bella both love, love it... i like it because it's simple and doesn't use any premixed mixes (i don't like those for myself, so i don't buy them)
try a piece... it's actually really tasty (i stay away from the pellets though )

I made up a batch today to see if I could do it. Well silly me I can't follow instructions ya know. I basically doubled the amounts and used Gumbo blend for the frozen veggies. I had just enough of the Volkman's 15 minute soak and serve left to use for the seed. I also added a small sweet potato (garnet yam). As for me, I can't stand corn bread. YUCK. After it cooled a bit I gave some to each of the fids............. Benji dove right in, loves it. Cricket even ate some!! Sophie? Looked at it with her right eye. Looked at it with her left eye. Did a taste test, then it was gone. Zoey, bless her heart, looked at it, looked at me, looked at it then tossed it out of her bowl and stared at me. I picked it up, crumbled it for her.......... yeah she spoiled or what? ............ then she ate it!!! Of course I have enough to feed an army for a month, good thing it freezes!!!

the fids all still love it!!

a friend made a batch of birdy bread for me earlier this month and my fids wouldn't eat it after the first try. They swoop on this stuff tho. I gave it to them twice today and they all ate it both times!!

I tried, the receipe has a stamp of approval. Instead of apples and apple juice I used liquidized carrots and apples minus seeds with some water. Grating takes too long. I also added frozen mixed veggies, pellets, peanuts (not my bird -his favourite item) and seed.

It is so tasty they need to take big bites and try eat it whole.
