#1 | | | Sad to Say... Gus died tonight, I don't want to type right now and please don't judge me right now, I did everything I could. I will show you what I posted on another forum. Quote: |

He's on heat right now, I'm going to take him in.
Please pray that I don't lose him too! I can't lose another bird! | Quote: |

The vet is not an avian vet, they aren't going to be around until tomorrow so I will call them in the morning. Right now he's in our "ICU". It's a glad container with holes on the top for air. He's laying on tissue and he's got a hand warmer underneath him. He's sleeping. I hope he's ok in the morning. | Quote: |

That's it, we are not getting ANYMORE. I just can't take this anymore. Gus was fine, he was walking and hopping around, so we put him back in his cage in a hut, we heard him squeak about 15 minutes ago and went to look and Pickles had attacked him. Pickles was his friend, I don't know WHY she did what she did. He had a heartbeat but wasn't breathing, I performed Avian CPR for 10 minutes but he didn't make it.
This is the 2nd Parrotlet Pickles had a hand in killing... No more friends for Pickles, no more Parrotlets until Pickles is gone. I just don't want to risk any more lives, she thinks she's a human and she goes around killing other birds... I'm so sad right now. | |

#7 | | | Liz, Parrotlets are different than alot of Parrots. But they have alot of basics like communication in common. I dont believe she was trying to kill either one. She's hormonally and psychologically unbalanced so dont blame her behaviors it's not intent.
When you have other birds around a Parrotlet it's always risky even for the Parrotlet.
They bite each other for all kinds of reasons, even warnings that the other is in danger. When mine are wanting to go to sleep if it's too "late" (dusk) and they might happen to be not in the cage, like on the boing, I have to go over and SLOWLY tell them it's time for bed and get up if I move too fast the younger one bites the older one to warn her "alert, something bad might be happening". Then she bites him back like "you dope it's only the one with the food" then they have a "discussion".
Parrots use their beaks for alot of reasons you just dont expect the smallest ones to have such a drive and strength.
Also they are VERY close to their genetic parents in wildness. They were the last parrots to be captured from their homes in the wild and bred in captivity and are not domesticated at all. (more than others, even).
She needs a program of calm, routine and predictable events with NO interaction with the others. I know I said that before, sorry, but it's more true with Parrotlets than any others.
The same thing goes for the newer one you just brought home. They are all the same and their traits will come out eventually. |
