Default Pi'ere, my new PBFD

Yup I have just adopted another. His name is Pi'ere.

He is fully feathered but only has half a bottom beak and a 6cm long top beak. He is appx 8 years old.

I got a call on Saturday, the owner is 80 years old and just gone into hospital, not to come out of, on oxygen, painful reminder of my dad, I had to walk out of the room, couldn't handle that one again.

Anyway, the owner went in 2 weeks ago, left the avairy door open hoping the bird would fly away to freedom. Not so.
I am fast becoming the PBFD rescue here.
I just spoke to my vet, she said give him a month to settle in then bring him in for a beak clip.
How the poor darling can eat properly I have no idea. I will post a pic of him soon.

No, not testing him, I cannot afford any more tests. What happens, happens. If he definitely has it well so be it, if not then so be it. I give up, it is endemic here. Whoever wants to judge for me taking him on and having him outside so be it.

My vet just said to me...."good on ya for taking him on, poor bird" The bird, think he is just happy to have fresh water and some decent food.
I hope he survives from the shock of being rehomed. Keep your fingers crossed.

Oh just had to add, Pi'ere and Peggy, what a name match lol.
Was meant to be...love signs here.

Oh btw, no, not having babies. If ever there is an egg I will have to destroy it. PBFD can be passed on in the egg I am afraid.

Here are some pics. Note the bottom of the beak. His left side is normal, right side is missing, you can see his tongue. Last one is of him, handsome aye!!

He certainly looks healthy despite the beak.
Beautiful guy.

Thanks both of you.

He is soooo handsome isn't he. Such a character already.
He is starting to talk in the bird room. I can hear him coming out with some stuff.

No doubting his owner before cared about him. But probably not to the extent of what should have been done for him. I am guessing it was just uneducated love to be honest.
He had sunflower seed for a diet and his water bowl was green, but the man is old and sick. He was ignorant about PBFD and the beak growth/splitting/deviation, whatever. You have to admit though, Pi'ere is one BIG healthy looking bird regardless.
I only hope I can keep him this well.

He is a big beautiful fellow. So sorry about the owner - they are blessed you have taken him.

Even with the 'poor' diet & the owners own health, he must have been hand feeding him treats or something from his own food. With a cracked/broken beak I bet he loves table scraps.

I keep thinking about Bunny [the Grey I bird sat this Spring] & how she insisted I sit at the table near her cage. She'd climb down the cage & eyeball my plate. I'd give her some veggies or french toast & she was very happy to climb back to the top with her finds.

You are a wonder with these needy birds. It shocks me that you are hounded.

Hi Sue and Peggy! I know you two will teach Pi'ere a thing or two! Ruby says "step-up!" Sue, you and Peggy are the best of eggs!
