While I rarely use any form of chemicals living in the country I don't like the thought of drinking the stuff in my well water. But there are times that you would like something for things like roaches. I have even had a hard time finding borax as I have used it in the past and although I find it doesn't always work but have had a hard time find the percentages of sugar to borax. So if you can post the ratios you use so that when I find the stuff can mix it right. We thought that we were ok then on Sat we found a large bug in the living room. So were a little freaked again. It has caused late nights with the flashlight looking in the dark for the little nasties haven't seen any so far but am not convinced they aren't lurking waiting to get me. If we have to call in the pros it will have to wait until summer when I can take the fids to the trailer for a week or so. We don't want to expose them at all and since it is -18 c at night and -8 during the day camping out is not an option here. Roaches are rare in this area so not much is in the stores even in the places were there is no ban. The larges places like Toronto have always had those kind of problems. I read an article from an bug guy(can't spell the proper name) and he said that in the first 20 years of his career he had never seen a bed bug but since the ban it has increased by 400 % in Toronto. He thinks the ban is part of the problem and the other thing is that people see these kind of bugs are seen as you being dirty and he has said you can bring them home from the store in a box. I said I hate bugs but I have to say I do love bugs and spend a lot of time looking at them outside where they belong. I am thinking that if I have to go to the pro's I might ask the former owner to pay for it as she was aware and just didn't think we would take the bird! Wrong but I would have left everything else behind. From everything everyone has told me the cage stored in the garage should be clear to sell in the spring.
Gail, if it becomes an issue before the summer the fids are always welcome to stay here while you get things done!! It's no problem. (Hope you don't have a problem though)

All bugs love it though.....its sweet. What I do is, mix 1/2 & 1/2 boric acid & honey. I mix with a plastic fork or spoon (anything left over from takeout) and put on a foam plate (a small one).

Thanks Kris that is really generous of you. Hopefully we won't need to take you up on it though. Haven't seen any more but time will tell.I find myself lurking around the house at night with a flashlight good thing our neighbors know we are home or I could end up explaining to the cops why I am using a flashlight in the dark when hydro isn't out . I also would like to thank everyone else I think that I had the proportions wrong which would explain why it didn't work so well for me. The honey idea sounds really good for the ants that seem to invade our trailer in the summer they really like honey but might be to tempting with other pets around.Hedi seems to have a three foot tongue and a neck that can stretch just as long so it would only be good in place that I know she can't get into. I have checked and combat is not for sale here in Canada. I can get it through e-bay but am not sure if it would go through the border. It is such a comfort knowing that there is pepole just a mouse click away to help us with questions. We feel like we did when we brought home our first kids from the hospital. As an update she has turned into a loving kind bird. She is allowing me to touch her and is playing with me as well even when Leo is home and will ask to come to me. She is even gong into her cage to snack and play during the day. She is willing to try new foods not that she likes everything but has come to expect a place at the dinner table just like Simon and he is eating things that he wouldn't touch because she is eating them. She had never had a real bath so didn't seem to do any preening but after having a bath she was watching Simon and started to do it as well. Her feathers seem more a vivid color and a little more shiny. We have been weighing her every Friday and she has gained 45g in the three weeks we have had her. While it was clear that she hadn't had much fresh food she is now demanding it at lunch and looks around to see if I am cooking in the evenings. So much fun it feels like she has always been here.

Oiiiiiiiiiii.....looks like the parrot rescue I volunteer at...All it took is one and they're literally ALL OVER....even climbing on our feet and legs. We use a shop-vac to get 'em when we clean. As soon as someone moves a cage, we suck them. They LOVE to hide in the wheels. Even when we power spray, or toss the cages in the pool....they still survive in the hollow cages. I'd horendeous but it got me over my fear of roaches QUICK!

This is why I only bring BRAND NEW into my house. We'll see with Bailey's used stainless steel cage, though Thank God Joe is an exterminator!
