Default Struggle with my birds.

Pi'ere's beak is so deformed that I now realize why he was only fed sunflower seed. Tomorrow I am going to have to stock up and give him exactly that. I fear he will go down if I don't.

Now I know why he is so fat and survived. Sunflower seed is full of fat. But that is the only seed he can crack on his own. He can eat soft apple and his toast for variety but that is it. His previous owner also gave him heaps of Ritz crackers soaked in his water. The bowl I took with me, but it is calcified and green, I gave him a new water bowl. I could not even open his avairy door properly to get in to get him out to be honest.
I had to get a shovel and dig away the dirt and weeds to open it enough to get the travel cage inside. In the end I had to throw a shirt over Pi'ere and grab hold of him.

So sad, these rescued birds, so very sad.

You and Pi'ere are going to be just fine. I bet Peggy will see to that! ha! With love a person (bird) can overcome just about anything. He has probably already forgotten about that horrid cage because of you and his lovely new place outside! Sweet bird!

Why don't you try:
baby food, oatmeal, raisins, tiel mix, any fresh fruit, Gatorade, aloe...and lots of other stuff. Crack his nuts for him till you get the beak done.

Billy survived on nothing but unshelled sunflower seeds and monkey nuts for this first 4 months i have had him, the vet said he is in excellent condition despite his diet, it wasnt as though that is all he was offered, just that anything else was foreign to him and either ignored or thrown on the floor untasted. They are remarkably hardy and we read of people who survive on nothing but baked beans or sprouts. I am pleased to say that in the last 4 days Billy has eaten grapes, strawberries, pear and tomatoes. I am so proud of him and the pleasure when I fed him tonight with grapes and tomatoes in the same dish as his seeds and nuts was unbelievable.

Could he hold/eat cookies? Maybe oatmeal/nut & raisin etc cookies?

Thought that his last owner had a way to feed him that might be unusual & unacceptable in normal circumstances. I'm sure you'll come up wit some ideas that will work as well - if not better.

I went shopping today. I have bought plenty of soft fruits for him, I also picked up a lot of sunflower seed and other things I though he would be able to eat. I changed his seed bowl to something he can access a bit better, I also fixed up a large water bowl for him and changed a ladder and few things in there to suit him better.

He had his toast and marg this morning and I had a rogue strawberry, for this time of year which I gave him. He loves peanuts and seems to be able to crack those raw in the shell and eat them. I watched him today and he uses his foot to get hold of his food and put it to his beak. This is why I changed his food bowl, so he could get to it easier.
We will work it out, he is ok, I am a worry wort. Just when I take on a pet I take it with my heart, I just don't want to set them back.

The larger dishes should be a big help for him Sue. I bet if you steam some carrots and broccoli so it's soft that he would like that also. Probably chunks of baked sweet potato would work well too.

We have a lot of good recipes in our Recipe Forum that would be good for him. Things he could pick up to put in his mouth.

I looked up a few, but check out the forum, lots of yummy stuff in there;

Sweet Potato Burrito

1 Sweet Potato
Unsweetened Fruit Juice
Sprinkle of Cinnamon
¼ cup chopped Almonds or Walnuts
Whole Grain Bread

Steam your Sweet Potato until tender, peel and mash. Add chopped nuts and Cinnamon. Add a small amount of unsweetened fruit juice to the mashed Sweet Potato/Nut mixture to make a paste.

Flatten a piece of Whole Grain bread with a rolling pin. Spread a layer of the Sweet Potato mixture on the bread and roll tightly like a burrito. Slice and serve!

You could probably even add some finely chopped greens to the sweet potato mixture.

Here's a link to the 5 Grain Cookie Recipe which would be good for him to put pieces in his mouth;

5 Grain Cookie Recipe

The soft foods should help a lot to get a better diet into him, while the vet is working on his beak.
