There are milk paints & paints similar. Acrylic/Laytex probably isn't a good food group - don't know if it is an everyday hazard. What are you painting?
I have some big projects around here waiting & I plan on painting when I can open up a room all day - & I will paint one wall each day. I find the overall effect is a lot less if you don't saturate a whole room. I may keep the birds out until the smell is gone.
A lot of the toxicity comes from the materials that are used in making the colour [ie: cobalt, Chromium ... ] You would have to call the paint store/manufacturer or try & find a list about the toxic nature of the minerals or chem used. The colour is a very small part of house paint - not like in art painting.
