Is this paint safe to use with birds in the house? If not, is there any kind that is?

There are milk paints & paints similar. Acrylic/Laytex probably isn't a good food group - don't know if it is an everyday hazard. What are you painting?

I have some big projects around here waiting & I plan on painting when I can open up a room all day - & I will paint one wall each day. I find the overall effect is a lot less if you don't saturate a whole room. I may keep the birds out until the smell is gone.

A lot of the toxicity comes from the materials that are used in making the colour [ie: cobalt, Chromium ... ] You would have to call the paint store/manufacturer or try & find a list about the toxic nature of the minerals or chem used. The colour is a very small part of house paint - not like in art painting.

How I do it is one room at a time. I use top quality Kelly Moore paint here where I live/work. Off gassing is the process of drying and or curing. Water based latex paints do take 8 to 12 hours to dry and cure. Massive air flow from fans and what not will speed this up.
An employee at my local Kelly Moore store lost an Amazon after painting with enviro-friendly zero VOC paint. Which is where I got the idea to wait 24 hours before putting birds in the room. Even then make sure it's not a sealed room and there is air flow. Even though we can't always smell it, one thing is sure, if you can smell the paint it isn't done off gassing.

Thanks guys. When I get moved into my new apartment my mom and I will be doing touch-ups on my dressers and such that have scratches. We also talked about painting some big canvases for decoration and stuff. Nothing will be done in the same room as Ollie, that's for sure.

I paint with acrylics, as in paintings, not walls, and they are fine. But I am not sure if it is this type of paint you are referring to? There are no fumes, you can eat the paint and be fine. Eve accidentally flew into my paint brush one day. I didn't notice it until it had dried, It looked like he just pooed on himself somehow. Once dry all I could do is wait untill those feathers moulted out. He was perfectly fine.
