Im thankful I have not had to worry about using that yet. I always have cornstarch on hand though.

I used styptic powder on myself once when I accidentally cut myself, just to see what it felt like. OMG! Very painful, other than nails.....nope, I'll use flour, but I like the aloe plant idea even better.

Maybe everyone has seen the Pedicure tool for trimming nails.
I don't think they make one for birds yet.
Clipping does to much damage to nerve endings and as we all have found, to close...Blood...
We use a dremel tool now, works much better, faster, cleaner, and no damage to nerve endings and or Blood.
Even those clippers that are rounded and claim to cut evenly, damage nerve endings.
We use flour here, always have.

Since we've had so many feather issues with Morgan, our vet told us to use corn starch. It has seemed to stop the bleeding pretty quickly and I know it doesn't hurt her and isn't dangerous should she chew on the feather where it was used.

What about Cayenne Pepper for birds? I was always wondering about it. Contrary to what one may assume, my Dad swears it does not burn when applied to a cut (obviously, do not used around muscus membrane like your eyes or nose or mouth), but my Mom pulled it out when my Dad got a very deep cut and the bleeding stopped pretty much on the spot (wet in into a paste). He said the worst it will do it feel a little warm or sting a tiny bit. They say it actually helps heal and dull the pain. They swear by it...

Though I have never had the chance to test it on myself, I always wondered for the birds. I mean, this stuff stopped the bleeding instantly, which was not always the case with flour.

Here is are several sites I found on Cayenne being used to stop bleeding, and suposedly it disinfects as well?? Anyone use it? Opinions PLEASE!

I don't know how I missed this thread, but we use cayenne pepper in various ways. It does stop bleeding quickly, we have used it on ourselves to prove it, and it has been proven for birds as well. Cayenne has helped me with sinus issues as too, I drink a 6 oz. glass of OJ with a teaspoon of Cayenne pepper at least once a day. We also sprinkle cayenne on our birdie pasta and they love it.

I completely forgot about this thread (I just got an email reminder with your reply)! I have tried it an it works! I had clipped my friend' bird's nail a tad too short and it stopped the bleeding on the spot. The bird did not seem distressed at all.

I used it on myself too,and like my dad said,it does not burn and it did seem to help dull the pain (maybe that was just in my head).

I too drink drinks with cayenne; my favorite is the maple syrup, hot water, lemon and cayenne tea.

ps: i used it on myself dry and it's works just as well. but with a bird i would make a little past in case the bird figets while we are applying, so that the powder does not go into the air et get into that nares or in the eyes.

It is too bad that there is so much negativity around cayanne, I think mostly because it is a pepper, but it really has a lot of benefits. It can bring blood pressure down in a very short time for us humans too.

If I were to myself, it would have to be corn starch because I would figure if its safe and recommended for my Iguanas then, it has to be safe for a bird. Right?~Jenna
