Default Spring and Summer Safety

With the beautiful spring weather here and summer close, what ideas can you share that will help our members plan for a bird safe environment with the temptation to open windows and doors for better ventilation and using fans for better air circulation? Also, getting your bird(s) outside with you for fun in the sun!

never take your bird outside unless it is caged or on a harness.

I don't have ceiling fans in my apartment, so I use an oscillating floor fan (the kind without the blade- here's one I have: Lasko Products - Pedestal Fans - Model 2112, 2113, 2116 & 2117) that is bird safe. That may be an idea for rooms that the birds are frequently in.

Good idea about checking screens- never open a window that doesn't have them.

Be doubly vigilant about those doors, particularly if you have kids! You know they're going to be running in and out approximately every 30 seconds.

Disable those ceiling fans! Forgetting just one time to shut it off before letting the fid out could easily result in a heartbreaking tragedy.

If your fid's cage is in front of or near a window, be mindful of how quickly direct sunlight can overheat them.

Don't position an air conditioner so that it blows directly on your fid's cage. Even if it doesn't blow directly on them, watch that they don't get chilled.

If you take your fid outside (on a harness of course) to share a family barbecue, make sure they can't get close enough to land on the grill! Even if the hood is shut they could be badly burned.

Make sure you wash off any insect repellent before handling your fid!

If you're in a West Nile disease prone area, avoid exposing your fid to mosquito bites!

Don't forget to stock up on your favorite cold beverages!

Thanks for all of those reminders. During fun times in the summer we don't want to forget the safety of our birds!

Be careful of the hot afternoon setting sun over heating the room that your birds are in.
