Default Safe and Dangerous Woods

Found this in my favorites. For those of you who make your own wood toy parts or use natural branches for perches, this is a good reference.

Arty.... I just happened to notice that Firethorn is toxic on your list and safe on the other list. Anyone know for sure? I did not yet check closely all the names on each list & compare to the other lists.

So I am wondering now, how are we supposed to really know if any of these lists are really accurate - seeing this discrepency for example?

I've noticed these sort of discrepancies before. I tend to look at several of the lists, and make sure what I'm looking for appears as safe on all of them. It doesn't do a lot for your confidence though, does it?

It sure doesn't. I know apple is safe, but on some sites I'll see it listed as unsafe. I think they might list it that way to cover all bases thinking the fruit trees have a possibility of being sprayed. I've also seen some sites get very explicit. Exp: Some trees, the bark is toxic, or the leaves but the actual wood isn't.

Also note... because this is a world-wide web some trees will have different names in different English speaking countries.

For instance "madrona/madrone" is what we in BC call an "Arbutus".

I'm not sure if there are others in the list that fall into that issue as well.

I didn't consider that- thanks for pointing it out!

If you go to the link in the first post, it is on the safe list with a side note:

Quote:
Eucalyptus - while it appears on many toxic lists I have never been able to find a good reason for it being there. The level of phenols (the toxic elements in eucalyptus) is lower than in many pine species which are considered perfectly safe. While you might want to avoid the foliage there doesn't appear to be any reason to do so. Considering that many lorikeet and cockatoo species eat the flowers and new leaves in the wild, and that it is
the dominant native wood for Australia concern over it's toxicity seems exaggerated.
Sorry, that's the extent of my knowledge on it!
