Default Help Termites

Anyone ever have to deal with these? Trying to find an option other than having the house tented which I'm afraid would involve moving out for a week (this is a guess, not really sure yet how long we would need to be away) with Ro with all of her belongings and having to worry about trying to make sure furniture walls etc. are not contaminated with poison upon our return

Call around -- there are several supposedly pet safe alternatives & the exterminators should be able to provide you with information. Hopefully they can treat the ground and not need to tent, if you don't have too bad an infestation. Even if the house is tented, clean up won't be quite as horrid as you imagine, since most of the compounds will dissipate or being inactivated pretty quickly afterwards. Good luck.

My parents had termites and they dug a small ditch along the outside of the house and sprayed like that, to my knowledge they never sprayed inside. I would call around and get different opinions and see what your options are. Gosh it would be a pain in the butt to have to move the family and pets out!

There are two different types of termites and the treatment depends on the type you have. My house had termites and the exterminater was able to spot treat it with the fids right there. No problem at all. It was done in a hour. This particular type of treatment involved drilling small holes in the affected area, injecting the chemical, then plugging the hole with caulking compound.

Thanks for the input Doyle's Mommy and CatsChair. Sorry about not specifying....I'm pretty sure they are dry wood termites which have typically been treated by tenting. Subterranean (sp?) termites are treated by putting stuff in the ground and around the foundation. I will definitely be speaking with several companies, also wanted to know how others with birds may have dealt with this issue as part of my research. Thanks Joannie for sharing your experience, comforting to know I may be able to eradicate the little buggers without too much inconvenience.

I came across what appears to be a very environmentally friendly and completely non-toxic process by using heat - unfortunately, I haven't been able to locate a company in Florida that does it - it's mostly used in California.

Again greatly appreciate everyone's input

I have seen a system advertised that involves electrocuting them. I have not seen it used yet but have heard mixed reviews about it.

Thanks anyhow Joel I was pretty sure it was something you never had to deal with because I'm sure the Termites know better than to dare to cross the moat and enter the sacred compound

That's an interesting concept - I'll have to research and see how they do it - The heat method I read about is basically designed to bake them whereas this concept prefers the frying method.

Thanks for the lead Jim.

P.S. Was glad to read that little Miss Sophie has continued to improve

LOL ... Btw Lori , ya know of course that now that you admitted to having Termites in your Kingdom, I will have to strip-search ya when ya visit - just to make sure you are not unknowingly acting as a Trojan Horse when crossing my moat. Tell your BF (if he comes along - yes he is invited too) not to worry about that himself as I have other plans for him -

BF ......
